Unread post Windows 7 no Telnet... Plz help!
I am running windows 7 and i cannot load telnet. i turned on the telnet feature with no sucess still. i am trying to run TWX to get onto any server but everytime i do it gives me an error saying "Unable to bind a listening socket on port 23. You will need to change it before you can connect to TWX Proxy". I can only play with jave telnet servers but that is without a full screen and no scripts. I have not played TW since the 80's but am really having fun playing on a java version now w/o a script. I have never used a script before with TW but want to see if I can get one going but i cannot even load a telnet server at the moment.

Please help me. I have basic computer knowledge but no expert.

Thanks!

The "unable to bind" error means you need to change the port that TWXproxy uses to listen on (2nd tab in the config menu). Windows telnet is fine, but I recommend either putty or zoc as a minimum.

Basically you just load twxproxy, then telnet into twxproxy, and have twxproxy connect to the server.

I feel your pain, I started after an 8 year leave and like you began with the Java client.

I do use zoc, you can get it here: http://www.emtec.com/zoc/
The free evaluation mode does not time out and does what we need it to do.

If you want to use the TWX scripts, the address you set in your telnet program (zoc) is localhost and whatever port you care to use, like Sing said, the second tab (Program > Listening port) That must be the same in order for this to work.

Now, you use TWX to connect to the game, so in the first tab is where you put the server name, IP address and connecting port. Most use port 23, but not all.

I'm certaintly no expert with these scripts, but can use a few. To load the scripts you use your mouse to right click on the TWX icon, then load scripts. You access the TWX dbase with the $.

If you find that all too frustrating, and I know it is. You can also use Swath and you can get that here: http://www.swath.net/

The very nice thing about Swath is the graphic maps, and if you find you like the TWX scripts, you can still run those from within Swath, but it also has a lot of build in scripts and a very nice record function so you can make our own custom macros.

Welcome back! Where did you used to play in the 80's?

Hey Crunch this user pmailed me with the win 7 telnet problems, he apparantly is an old registered swath user, if you or someone else can help him out with some spefic info on getting twx working I am sure he'd appreciate it. I dont have twx setup or I would help him myself.

Yes it is ok to use twx on the swamp bbs.... just not some of the "excessive scripts" which could be considered cheats by other users.

If he's trying to run TWX in the HVS game, it won't work at all. TWX only works on TWGS. If he wants to play your HVS game he has to use Swath or write his own scripts with zoc.

Close to 100% of all BBSs use port 23. Port 2002 is also popular with TWGS servers. Some sysops run a BBS on port 23 and a TWGS on port 2002. Here are actual percentages of active TWGS Servers from my database:

58% - Port 23
38% - Port 2002
4% - Port 5023

Note: Port 23 is the only port actually reserved for telnet connections, but any port can be used.

Hi SetZer

Are you from Guam ?
IF so .. I haven't seen you in years ...

I have been wondering where you went .. you use to play on Marianas BBS back in the day didn't you ?

This is Vid .. you may remeber me ..
I too am from Guam .. Agat .. hehehe

Anyways .. I see we have some HVS old school players here ...
here is the questions :

1) In old school play ( use your memories) , can you capture a scout ?
and why or why not ?

2) Could you hide on a port and still see your fighters being hit ?
(this is a feature of interactive sub prompts on or off)

The TWGS now and for awhile had these defaults set ....

No to capping scout or pod - The Mad Hatter and I used derive harmless amusement leaving corbo bombed scouts here and there. If the ship didnt carry a pod, could not be capped.

No to hiding on a port and getting fig hit messages..

Miss a few things - zturn colo move, and hide in the debris of a nuked planet come to mind (was great if photonned). Player I will not name didnt like the last two and told me that he/she convinced JP they were bugs - I cannot disagree.
