 Dunno. You can order in sufficient quantities and squeeze enough manufacturer deals as a large plant to build things cheaper than the end user can. Add in the fact that 90% of today's PC users really don't understand their machines and the cost of tech support alone becomes worth the cost. Most consumers these days are not concerned with top of the line performance nor are they concerned with longevity, they want a reasonably fast system that'll last afew years and perform basic tasks with a minimal of headache and technicality. You get crap computers for cheap- running on celerons or semprons.
My brother was going to buy a laptop and I told him he needed dedicated video RAM for his games. The salesdroid told him "If it has an ATI sticker, it is dedicated RAM." A quick search of the store's website (CompUSA AKA Con you ese) showed they are all shared RAM. My brother wouldn't believe me until I had him check the system properties of each laptop he was looking at.
