Sounds to me like the problem is a non-optimized swath.
There are flags you can pull from zoc, and not from swath (and vice versa) to let you know what helper your using. Doing this will let you set up your initial variables either through zoc or pulling from the swath DB.
I dont think it's going to be that easy to make your scripts work in both zoc and swath without hassle.
Some commands dont work properly in swath either compared to zoc so I would just tell them to use what they have
