I'm very disappointed to hear that there won't be a Linux version. So where does that leave us enlightened Linux types?

SWATH: I've given up hope of ever seeing the UNIX version. Will not run under WINE because it uses unsupported VXDs.

ATTAC: Looked promising, but I guess we'll see how WINE handles it.

J-TWAT: Haven't tried the latest version, but the last one I tried was flaky and the source code almost gave me a seizure. (The code for the parser was apparently auto-generated from a grammar and never existed in human-readable form.) Looking forward to Son of J-TWAT.

TWX: Seems to work well under WINE, but learning the script language requires picking apart other people's scripts.

This is a big encouragement to continue developing my own helper. :o)

the sad part is that we coded v4 until beta 3. ALL the code is there. unfortunately, the GTK+ interface for windows just could not handle the telnet stream coming across and writing to the GUI and locked up within the first five minutes EVERY time. We tried numerous ways to correct the flaw; however, we just werent successful. It was either rewrite it in win32 API or just sit around and wait for GTK+ to mature. We still have the codebase, and can eventually fix it for GTK 2.0 when it matures. Another option is to let another developer take over the LINUX branch of CVS, since the new win32 code is completely seperate.

how does WINE work. i am sure ATTAC can run on it since it's graphics is completely win32 API driven and if WINE matched the API, it should run correctly. also it now works property with TWX and any other proxy programs.

It's basically a clone of the Windows API. Windows apps can then run natively (architecture-wise) on Linux. I'll try the Windows version of ATTAC and see how it works.

That is unfortunate that you were unable to get it to work properly with GTK for Windows, but I have to admit that I am glad that you made the tough decision. The ATTAC 4.0 betas were flaky to the point of being unusable under every version of windows I tried it on and since my FreeBSD and Linux boxes are text-only machines I wasn't able to get any use out of that way either. Good call. Hopefully GTK 2.0 will fix the problems and this will be a temporary thing.
