What’s up sports fans? Just a couple updates on the J-TWAT project.

1) Well, I finally got some time to do some coding and fix some nagging bugs. This means I’m pretty much ready to release the long overdue 1.5 code. The only thing I need to know is if there are any outstanding major bugs in the alpha code I sent out—i.e. something that makes the helper unusable. Planet scripts stopping at 3750 holds instead of 3500 is not major. Planet scripts not working at all would be major. The only known major bug right now is text not displaying correctly on some BBS systems. So those of you using the alpha right now, email me ASAP. Also, if you want the alpha for a peek (several major bugs in it), d/l http://j-twat.sf.net/jtwat1.5alpha.zip.

2) As of this release, I will most likely not be doing any more major updates on this code base. The reasons are many, but mainly because the J-TWAT code is some fugly junk that represents the way it was designed – piecemeal, and originally as a module to a program that limited what modules could do. In disgusting layman’s terms, imagine a growth on someone’s body that developed in all sorts of odd and unpredictable ways and eventually equaled about 3 times the mass of the original host. Yeah, that’s nasty. Anyways, beyond technical reasons, its gotten to be that I have no time anymore to manage the project like it needs to be. Any time I spend on J-TWAT will be either fixing major bugs or working on the next version, a complete (mostly) rewrite of the program, codenamed “Son of J-TWAT”, which is to be announced in the near future.

3) The near future being the next paragraph. ;) So I’m starting work on “Project: Son of J-TWAT”, mainly in the design phase right now. Basically I’m going to be reworking all the good pieces of J-TWAT into something that makes sense and is completely extensible by the average user. Everything that can be script driven will be (in possibly more than one language), and if you do know Java (and hopefully even if you don’t), you won’t have to know the J-TWAT code inside and out to add a new module/scripting system/data collection method/etc. I will be reusing old code, esp. at first just to allow scripting folks to get started with it. If anyone is interested in this project, and you are seriously interested in developing, and I mean it, SERIOUS, please email me with “Son Of J-TWAT” in the header. You do not have to know Java. I repeat, you do not have to know Java. Just general programming/scripting knowledge and you will be able to contribute.

Ok, I think that’s it. I’ll leave you with this fun fact: There are now 4 pages of links before you get to porn when you look up J-TWAT on Google. Woo hoo!
