I can see where the capcha will put a stop to duping, and allow you to pin-point who the baby seal killers are, but what additional latency will it add to the connection? Who's going to maintain the "gateway" server? Will this eventually be a pay to use service? Added value should involve fees to use.

Ok, so now let's pass the fee's onto the 3 or 4 sysops that will use it. John get a bill ready for the cost to implement this so called feature, capcha monthly fees & make it an add-on to TWGS. Plus can you add the stats of the games running this feature to the main page like the other stats. Probably best to just hard code it since it will never change.

Servers running Capcha Add-on: 1 / Players in Game: 0

I'm simply asking the question.

#1 - connection latency, how will this be prevented? This is my biggest concern with the process.

#2 - If this does work, it's added value, somone, somewhere needs to run the gateway server, that costs $'s I just see an opportunity for a new income stream for EIS. I never said JP would, and I have no idea if that thought has occured to him.

I'm in the business of supporting small businesses. Early on I told JP to charge fees like so many other games today. For those with more money than time, allow players to exchange turns for in-game credits for a R/L fee. Happens all the time, people spend R/L $'s on "virtual" stuff.

Start charging fees and you will see Trade Wars disappear instantly. If the intent is to run off all the current database of players then implement a monthly fee.

Again this is fine for all future versions, but you know why I don't play WOW, or any other of those types games anymore.... $65 for the software and $15 a month, and then you have to pay $ for upgrades.... NO THANKS. I would rather pay $200 for the game and no fees or nothing for software and pay a monthly fee but I find paying both ridiculous.

Wait... what is this, and how is it supposed to prevent duping?

There are millions of gamers who have different opinions. Otherwise WOW and silly Facebook games wouldn't exsist. You can play games for free on Facebook, but people have the opportunity to buy with R/L $'s virtual crap. They don't have the patience to work for their assests, much like heavy script players in this game would rather run world trading scripts in unlimited turn games.

Huge difference between Time = Money and Turns = Money.

Capcha will not stop duping. Sorry but with the availability to gain multiple IP's you won't stop duping. Most people to avoid duping will just call someone they know to join a game and turn on the bot and walk away.... in that case bot = dupiing? IMO yep. But in theory you have done nothing wrong, different person, different ip. But this also would be the same thing as what if you start a game and a person gets called away for a couple weeks, duping? This could go forever.

Scripters against scripters, botting is the rule, botting is legalized duping.

Kill TWX, we kill botting/duping.

BTW, TW was one of the very first pay-to-play games. In the '90's we all paid $5 per month, per server!

You didn't play the "cool" servers then, or don't remember. LOL

No probably not, I spent most of the 90's in locations that had lot's of sand and no beaches. :) So when I was home, TW's was really not that high of a priority, guess I was not one of the cool kids.... :?

We ran RiverCity in the late 80s and early 90s - we didn't charge for our BBS or games (including a registered TW) and had a great player base. The only systems in our area that charged were the ones that maintained a large download area so they could afford the LD bill to get the files.

Was your's a local dial-up only, or were you on the telnet network?

My local, since I was already paying for access did not charge a fee for local gamers, but when I telnetted out to other servers there were $5 monthly fees. We were happy to help pay for our entertainment. Back then the HVS MBBS license was about $350, hardward needed maintained, etc.

We ran dial-up only for our area and usually had 10-15 players or so if I remember right. The players would play RC and then on Tornado Alley - both WWIV systems (I ran RC, and was a co-SysOp on TA). RC was ran first on an 8088 with 60 MB drive, and then on a 386 system with 150 MB HD and a CD-Rom for file downloads - 14.4 USR HST - nice system for the time. I know the hardware cost was high with the modem being in the $500 range by itself. My wife said, "You won't ever need to buy another computer, will you?!?!"
