There is not much to tell just yet. I've spent my career in the military (both as a Sig Op and Search & Rescue). I've spent a lot of time away on deployments, natural disasters, etc. When my service came to an end this year, Daala and I bought a section of a company (programming department) and decided to go into the world of designing games. Since I am a programmer already and design our own software, and we have had our own company since 1993, we wanted to do something fun. So we have begun branching our company into game engines like Torque 3D, FPS Creator, Unity, NeoAxis, UDK. We are making media right now, such as segments for creating rooms, entities- characters, objects, etc. We have three first-person games in development currently using FPS Creator (one is a WW2 game, one is a SciFi game, and one an Egyptian game). Daala does model making and texturing, I do the level design and coding, plus some model making as well. We're not sure which engine to look at yet. It's been fun, to say the least. I'm not use to being a work-from-home Dad with a two year old still home, but I'm adjusting. |

Yes and your child is really going to benefit from this experience. I know mine has. I've been in business since he was 12, and he's been my IT dept. since he was 16-18. Six years ago I got a commercial office, and that's really helped to grow my business, I still have the office at home I use to work on projects. My son is now 29 and a few months ago leased the office space next to mine with his own computer repair, sales & support business. We're more like partners now, and we're able to toss business to one another. He's mainly hardware, and I'm getting more and more interested the software side of IT. Frustrated would describe it better, I want to know why it seems there's a growing lack of what seems to be quality control these days. Just last week I lost 3 hours because Adobe Reader decided to stop printing PDF's. It printed one form, and then quit no updates between print jobs. Grrrr... So I'm going back to college this fall, and the rest of what you posted about your games, I may be able to understand that too some day. |

LOL I'm talking about MSOffice, QBK, Adobe Acrobat. These three are my biggest pain in the arses. They are so integrated that one does an update it seems to backfire and break the other two. |

The last auto-update I did unleashed the new Microsoft Instant Messager on me. I'm sick of software taking over my computer. The lines between malware, virus and legitimate software are becoming so blurred. I already had to stop using McAfee anti-virus because the software was more intrusive than any virus I'd ever contracted. And trust me, it was just as hard to remove as any virus. And the new IM is like having a used car salesman move into the spare room. Whatever happened to a small window with a list of contacts and chat history? Do I need to be bombarded with every channel of media Microsoft is remotely associated with? Social media and cross-promotion is getting so out of control. I remember when software was about features, not selling me something else. |
