 Best Edits and Why
In the beta section there are discussions on a lot of things that potentially effect game play. Some things cover "how the game is played today", "what the game really should be to stay true to its design" and basics things such as gridding and gBonus use.
This made me wonder what edits people really like and why. To that end, and please no "American Bandstand: Its got a great beat and easy to dance to" copouts, give your preferred edit(s). Unlim, turn-based, tourney edit, death-match - whatever you enjoy playing.
Unlimited: Sub Zero The edit has a very good balance between planets and ships provided the planets per sector are balanced against corp size. The ships offer at least 3 main options with the Red Rum, Enterra, and Ascian Boat for attacking and defending. Cashing ships for the reds have twarp, but early in the game are easy to take out by a blue or other red that wants to flip. Alien capping is profitable using the Enterra, and the first alien cap is only of medium difficulty depending on the age of the game. Game settings provide a good steal percent and port regeneration is good also. Planet fueling is very easy. Major issue is that ISP and death delay is off in the original edit and the Op has to catch it.
Turns: N/A I really don't play enough turn based games to have an opinion except I am biased toward World War II since I made the edit. I am guessing that Pirates is a very good edit from what I have heard other talk about it, but I have only scratched the surface of it.
k, that is my lame attempt at giving the main edit I play. Hopefully others will identify the edit(s) they like and why.

 Re: Best Edits and Why
Unlim: Sub-zero Balanced, alien cashing, aggressive, etc. Tweaked with ISP on, unlim turns (default edit was like 40k), and death delay on. Lots of reasons, it's just a fun edit.
Unlim choice 2: Starwars Balanced edit, no aliens, aggressive but expensive. No photons in default edit. Ships are balanced. Fun edit, challenging to play.
Turns: Pirates Not balanced, but fast and fun. Aggressive, cash flows pretty easily but not too easily. Ships are good, 1tpw multi-purpose privateer. Good for red, better for blues, lots of cheap figs. Can lead to a builder war, which is pretty unique.

 Re: Best Edits and Why
Building Games 1500 ~ 2500 turns no particular edit. Social Interaction, and just building I like to see how and what others can accomplish using the same amount of turns and figure ways to do better.
Alien Retribution for messing around and just killing aliens and invading planets and it is a great edit for new / returning players to get used to playing again. 5K ~ 10K turns (still waiting on AR2)

 Re: Best Edits and Why
Building games - for the social interaction.
Must be turns and time limit. 1k - 1500 turns, 2-6 hours.
I do still enjoy playing more classic edits, and I do have the patience to wait for citadels. I think slow citadels help to teach players to build better sector defenses, and to choose better building sites to remain hidden as long as possible.
Today's rules or truces I feel weaken these atributes, players choose to build in largest bbls first, because under truce rules, they can. But I do understand why and how these rules have come about.

 Re: Best Edits and Why
Poker Run ...Balanced edit. Good but not great for either Reds or Blues. Eden ...Unbalanced because of Defender ship but the Scorpion that pods into itself is fun. Borgan Edit ...For Alien chasing.
Subzero has too strong a Tholian ship imo. But I dont play it much cuz ive been there and done that,

 Re: Best Edits and Why
The funny part is Sub Zero was made by three greenhorn sysops. GOP started it with about 2 or 3 weeks sysop experience, he passed it to me to try to fix, which I had maybe a whopping one year experience as a sysop. He then passed it on to Res who had even less experience than I did at the time. Sort of like buying 1 lottery ticket and hitting it for a cool 20 mil the 1st time I guess. laff
My favorite Unlimited was the one that River Rat had in the game C spot. Can't even remember the name, and it went down with RR when he left.
My favorite high turn edit is Poker Run.
My favorite low turn game isn't really an edit. Non-MBBS/with MBBS penalties, basically stock ships slightly enhanced, planets hold a bit more cols/gas and cits about 1/4 time. The ICE tourney is a good example of the low turn edits I like.

 Re: Best Edits and Why
I haven't been back long enough to give a proper opinion. I do know I loved the pirate edit and SZ last I played
