Hi all, Stumbled onto the forum tonight -- totally randomly I came across a link to Tradewars today and remembered how much fun I used to have playing. The last time I played was over a 33.6 modem to give you an idea how long it's been. I always played in local games way back and when and I'm rather delighted to see there's a way to play on the net! That said, I see there is a tournament coming up and while I may be a little too rusty to play (am I? noobs welcome or no?) can someone recommend a game I could get into? I will be reading up on how to use helpers and even sign in through the web - literally I have been out of it for that long so any help on how to get back into it is appreciated! Thanks, seismik |

Stay away from unlimited turn games unless you are there just for the truce period to relearn the commands. These are usually killfests if no truce is in effect. Choose your games and try to get into one that has just been banged. Going into a game where people are defending/attacking will generally prevent you from making it to dock. When you get hit, and you will, ask how they did it - if you start trash talking, you won't make it very far. |

Welcome back! Where did you first see the link? Things have changed a bit as you might imagine. I returned after 8 years away. You will need to read this http://www.navhaz.com/dny_tw_tutorial.txt It will help explain a lot and get you back up to speed. Here's the link to the site that lists all the games currently running and where. http://www.thestardock.com/twgssearch/index.php And of course there's a lot of game resets announced here, so come back often! |

I've found Stardocks TWGS search to be a pretty valuable resource so i can't imagine any sysop not listing his games there unless he doesnt know about it. |

There is a check box in the software to list/not list. I think one reason not to list is to keep the people on this forum away from there servers. OR they just don't know. ANd If you want to find these servers all you need to do is use Google and Bing. They show up as various permutations in searches. |

There must be a pointer to give The Stardock the info. I dont know where are your going with this SG. Are you denying that these servers exist? Just use Google or Bing. Given a few minutes I can find 20 or 30 addy's for TW that are not on The Stardock Search. And Given that Stardock shows 19 servers last time I looked...... Ask John how many servers he has sold in the last 10 years..... The Stardock is a Great service....But MOST games? No. |

Agree with Parrot, there are servers that like minimal scripting and don't want anyone coming into the little pond who has been swimming with the sharks so to speak. Their whole eco system would be trashed by advertising on Stardock. You can sometimes run across these by doing a search because they setup webpages. I have played on a couple of them and you find out very quickly that they play a low key version. The Aussie server I found a few years ago was a good example - the nickname "Homicidal Americans" was used for a couple of players, Doog and Marduk - even with a 400-500ms ping. |

No. I'm not going anywhere with this at all...Im just shocked that "Most" public games arent listed at Stardock and when you said the "Check mark" i wanted to make sure we were talking about the same thing....No to be listed at Stardock you have to put ur server info in manually then it updates your game listing i believe. i dont doubt what your saying at all ..just was wondering how you find these games that are not listed there.....Now i know...Thanks.... |

From time to time I go looking for new recruits for Kraaken or TW in general. College LAn's are a popular place to set up a server as everyone gets to play with a lightening ping. I have talked to a couple peeps who have games for "Family" only running on someones puter as a way to keep extended family engaged. They play a SLow style usually. Frankly I wouldnt be killing my wife with a killscript. The Risk/Reward Ratio is pretty bad in that situation. Many games are still running as Doors in a BBS somewhere. |
