 Ice 9 is DOWN
Looks like the Beta has some issues that a few scripts can cause it to crash. If memory serves me correctly the Sysop is gonna be gone until tomorrow unless he can remote in and fix. I did send e-mail will have to wait and see.

 Re: Ice 9 is DOWN
Were they game scripts or tedit scripts that caused the crash? If the crash was caused by game scripts that can be ran by anyone that is a major issue. If it was caused by tedit scripts, that may be as simple of a solution as repairing the script.

Might be more this is just what a couple players were telling me. But I have not tested them here just doing t-edit stuff on mine right now.

I don't have a lot of public domain stuff, and I've tested citkilla, pdrop, ptorp, vacuum and unlim gridder on the classictw.com beta w/o an issue. If your server is being crashed by a few innocuous scripts, you might want to fix your server. It shouldn't be so easy to take down the game.

All I know is what I was told. You might talk to V'Ger since he is the one that is collecting the data. I only posted the server is down since he is out of town and others may be wondering why they can't connect.

None of my scripts do anything that a macro can't do, so if they're breaking a server... then that server is going to be broken by a lot of other things. If Vger can trace it down to something specific, I'd be happy to take a look at it and try to figure out the problem, but second hand whispers are useless. In the mean time, it's all just idle speculation and smack.

I then contacted the person that it happened to last night and he told me it was mombot planet stripper which I believe is based on a DNY script. I never accused the script of being bad I said whatever the script was doing resulted in the server going down. whether it be a memory leak or something else does not matter it still needs fixed. Back to original Ice is down.

Debatable, but I was referring more to phead's statement. There are 2 mombot strippers. The product mover and vacuum. Vacuum works fine, but it can lag things if a server is overloaded and the sector has a million planets. All the script does is build a macro burst and send it. You can get the same result using the nmac command or swath's macro looper. We've had a long discussion about the possibility of this problem over on the beta forum, in the "cap" thread. Take a look.

 Re: Ice 9 is DOWN
Regardless what script it was, IF it is an end user script that can be duplicated or exploited, it's a TWGS beta software glitch. No sense in argueing over who's fault it is or what script caused it. That's what this beta testing is all about, finding bugs/exploits and making sure they get fixed.

Ah ok I will go do some reading on that and I will test it on mine since I can't play this evening

If we can identify with what scripts and in what conditions the bug occurs, it would help to narrow it down so that we can reproduce it for JP to fix. So the more precisely we can understand these conditions, the quicker we can pass that info on.

More than likely this is a problem with the twgs/tw software unable to process data correctly that caused the crash. Very likely similar to what you and JP were discussing in the other thread concerning sending packets and not processing all the data. Xide ran into the problem of TWX crashing servers in the earlier versions of TWX, and at the time they came to the conlusion that TWX was causing memory leaks. Xide then coded TWX to fix the problem by restructuring the packet send. Regardless, this may not be a new issue, but something that JP has changed that has amplified it. But as you say, we will need to reproduce what happened to really know.

booger wrote: doesnt ice-9 run a lot of server side scripts also? Yep, he runs a lot more of them than I run on mine. I know on mine when a T-Edit script kicks it can cause some CPU spikes. My first TWGS server was a Intel 2.8Ghz server scripts would spike to 25 ~ 35% second a Dual Core 3, dropped the same script usage on CPU to 11 ~ 18% Final is a AMD Quad 3.2 it hits 3% on a heavy is all are running at once. Not sure exactly what he is running but I know they can be a resource hog. That could be adding to some of the issue. We will have to wait and ask when he returns.
