 EIS Invitational Tourny Settings
Greetings and Salutations one and all....
I've been asked by more then a few traders to Try and explain my reasons for some of the settings that are being used in the upcomming Invitational.I've stated several times that the settings ar meant to "poke holes" into some of todays strategies.,......So here goes my reasons followed by a poll.....
I REALLY dont want to change settings for this game BUT i'm willing to listen to reason.....
1. The Time Limit,,,,,,,INMO a turn based strategy game should not be have the advantage given to the player with the most "at keys time" I think it should be more about what you do in the time alloted...
2. Relog time penalty....Well with out this setting those individuals with "superior at keys time" will just log in check whose there and if no one log out...or check fig messages and log out etc etc...Setting this LOW like 1 minute nullifies this effectivness of this setting.. This also allows for the more effectiveness of Limpet tracking mines...If you can exit and enter a game to clear limpets it defeats the purpose. You shouldnt be able to clear a persons limpets in this manner...it should cost you turns and credits just like it cost the trader who layed those mines there.
3. Bots become way less of a factor with a time limit. 4. Teamwork is a MUST with a Time Limit

You can write a script to check the scores and experience w/o logging in. There's no time penalty for that. If it changes, then someone's active. Then take the corpies you have with crappy keytime, turn on their TWXproxy monitoring port, and use a bot to log them in. Watch grid activity via the lesser keytime ppl. You can have your twxproxy sit and watch someone's monitoring port and after X hits, log in as yourself and torp. Or use a coordinated bot approach and log in the person w/ the best ping time, have them torp.
From there just automate red cashing to reduce time usage. Get in, get out, cloak or sit safe in fed. Then just monitor the grid.
Decent scripting and small amounts of creativity can greatly nullify the limits imposed by TLs and shift the edge back to ppl w/ good keytime. There is very little that can be done to change that.
That's why you either set really low TLs and high login penalties, or nothing at all. Atleast IMO. IMO bots become a much bigger factor, and team coordination becomes a much smaller factor, as there's a huge benefit to automating everything and keeping players from sitting in the game. The rest is just making those bots do what you want them to do, which gives another advantage to scripters.

Yes Sing, I've done that before. Never wrote a script for it, but you can keep an eye on the game without getting penalized. While I like the idea of time limits, TWGS and Tradewars isn't programmed handle the setup very well. It's sort of like truce games, if someone wants to get around it, they will.

I really like to see time limits for tournament type games.

Sing please take this as a compliment..I really dont know many other players who would go to that extreme..or are even capable of that level of commitment...so while your post makes a valid point..I kinda feel like it proves MY point..It can STILL be done but it won't be easy.

Ok. I don't disagree that it would take a level of commitment beyond what we traditionally see these days (a commentary all it's own), and that for those glued to current bot scripts (that don't have a lot of time management tools built in) it would pose a challenge. But I also feel that a large portion of the game is the social aspect (SS and fed), and time limits tend to promote automation over socialization. Basically those are the 2 reasons (gives active scripters a massive advantage and reduces in-game socialization) I've never favored TL games as a player. As a sysop I'm more about finding what people want and what works tho. So, in the end, obviously you've got to go with what works and what ppl will play. I still wish you could do less than 100% ptrade in an MBBS game tho. I'd love to have a game where you could do megas but only have a 50% pneg.
