On Monday, 7/7/08 ICE9 will be switching ISPs and will be getting Verizon FIOS. For those of you unfamiliar wit FIOS, it is a dedicated fiber optic line that comes straight to my house.

So you are probably wondering what this means for you?
1) Faster pings - FIOS is supposed to be way faster than my current ISP
2) Improved stability - If there is high network traffic from my neighbors it should not slow ICE9 down.

I am also hoping this change will stop the recurring problems like we had earlier in the week.

Now whats the catch? In order to perform the install ICE9 will be down for an unspecified period of time on Monday afternoon. This outage could last up to 6 hours. Additionally, you must connect using the ice9-tw.com url and not my IP address as some of you have been. A different ISP means a different IP address obviously.

I will let everyone know how FIOS works and when ICE9 is back online.

sweet. i had fios in NY and i was really happy with it. just make sure you are there when they do the install. if you currently have cable internet, the installer will try to use your existing cable lines in your house instead of running ethernet and give you a cable modem - which is gay. make sure you have ethernet in your basement near where you expect they will install the box.

Thanks Rev,

I have a front to back split, so the basement is only a little submerged, and that is where the TWGS box is. Assuming they come in through the garage like they said they would, it will be a shorter run to where my computer is to where the coax starts, so hopefully it will be real easy for them.

Ice9 is back online and running FIOS. Please let me know if there are any significant changes, for the better or worse, in people's pings or lags.
