So the other day I was taking a trip down memory lane to my old BBS days and I thought to myself, "man wouldn't it be awesome if trade wars was still around". So I looked up Trade Wars and found "Trade Wars: Rising". I thought, wow this is great, until I played it for a little while... But as luck would have it, I found that the old school game is still alive and kicking! Why put up with an imitation when you can have the real thing right? So I hopped in a game over at ICE9 and found that the game had changed QUITE a bit since the 90's. This is what I've done so far: 1- Registered a copy of TWSA and TW2002 classic (hopefully the reg key's will arrive soon) for lots of practice! 2- Grabbed a copy of TWX Proxy 3- Grabbed a copy of Kokua (key feature being free!) 4- Jumped into a 3 day old game over at ICE9 (MOO2). The game only has 7 people in it with 2 of them being the top dogs and corped up. The particulars: -20,000 sectors -1,500 turns -Custom ship types I think. I doubt I'll be able to take either of them down, but I'd like to make things interesting! Now what I'm looking for is advice! Particularly on the scripting end of things and how I should proceed securing myself a nice section of space. I've run some paired port trading scripts, but that's as in depth as I've gotten. Any advice would be great! I'll be around for a long time. This game is one of my all-time favorites! Thanks! |

check out the stuff at this link http://www.navhaz.com/tutorials/ the first one is pretty much exactly what you're looking for personally, I would map (ztm, you'll read about that), pair trade 600 turns, go red, SST, cloak out, repeat (the sst part) depending how figged the game is (grid, you'll read about that), you might want to think about e-probing before going red or you might be able to sneak it in later since there are only 7 players in the game buy figs, hunt I wouldn't worry much about 'territory' - you don't have the turns or resources to make a base and secure it by yourself. best you can hope for is to stash your ships somewhere (maybe a 2-warp somewhere out of the way) if you don't want to haul them around before xtern btw what's kokua? without knowing or knocking it, i would recommend a terminal program (zoc is the most popular) |

oh btw, i was assuming stock-ish settings some games are more blue-solo friendly than others but generally speaking I'd put my cards in capping someone else's planet rather than building your own |

Thunder, Welcome back to TW, and ICE9, which I run. You might have better luck trying your hand at either games P or E, which are our more friendly building games. While they are older than MOO2, they are much less cut throat, much closer to stock, and the experienced players tend to help out the newer ones with advice, suggestions, etc. There are also ZTM maps available to download, which should help you out a great deal. Check out http://www.oregonsouth.com/ice9 to get an idea of what each game offers. If you have any questions, my email is all over the server. Good luck. |

Open source, a bit buggy, but free! I tried to demo SWATH, but the thing appears to be so crippled that it wasn't even worth it. Thanks for all of the input! I joined ICE9 - Evolution as well. There seems to be fighter grids everyplace in that game. That makes it tough to get started when you lose most of your figs looking for a paired port. |

What's the easiest way to go red? The only way that I can remember to do it was to kill good guys. Thanks! |

hmm easiest? Jettison a load of colonists in deep space, or go to underground at stardock and post a bounty on a blue player. Your way is ok too, attack a good guy... |

Whoa... are you the same thunder that I played with on the old Pirates Cove? Was a pirates game, you spent part of the game colonizing and the other part buying eq. Was w/ me, Severian, Quiver and a few others against Jester and crew. Was that you? |

I used to be the SysOp of a board called Thunder Rift in 312 back then. I just recently found Trade Wars again and hence my old BBS handle! That's a log winded way of saying I'm probably not you man |

Me thinks you would fair well to get yourself placed on an established corp and alow your new found team mates to help you with stuff like cashing, or coloing... You may have to do some grunt work for them, but it'll pay off. I believe good players are normally willing to share their knowledge and you'll know it's help you can use, coming from a corpie. However, I've gotten good advise and learned much from the opposite side too, so there you have it... May want to chek out grimy's site for the latest scripts too. http://www.grimytrader.com Welcome back, and just keep pluggin' at it. |

I'd love to get into an established corp after reading cabal's secret hideout, it seems like the only way to be competitive. I've been trying out some of the red cash scripting methods in a local game of mine with some success. I'm in a couple public games right now (one over at Ice9 the other at Ultimate Tradewars). I just went red and I'm going to give a shot at some SDT in a live environment. Wish me luck! Any corps looking these days? Seems like the corp recruitment board hasn't seen much action in a while. |

Actually you can be competitive in some edits as a solo, but you have to work very quickly because the longer the game lasts, the less chance you have against a corp. A turns game is pure math working against you and in an unlim it is time. An unlim truce game is a joke for a solo against decent corp players - you can survive for a while, but solo gridding is a losing situation the last few hours of a truce (esp if you are AFK, then it is game over). The best thing about corping is you see different methods of game play and learn a lot faster. You see the player who basically is the equal to "Hey Bubba, hold this beer and watch this" just before they get the rest of the day off and you see the player who thinks things through with a decent strategy and executes. Then you get the player who combines the above and they make the game a lot of fun. |
