Hey.. a bit nostalgic I guess. Anyway there used to be a BBS in Lawrence, KS called Metropolis BBS owned by Gary and Mary Ann Martin. I used to play there as Hideyoshi before TW went to MBBS. I can remember the day infact that TradeWars went MBBS. Did anyone else play there or even hear about it? Prolly around 1992-93 or thereabouts. There was also a BBS in Wichita. KS, called CONNECTions BBS that was one of the first BBSes to switch from Wildcat BBS to MBBS, just to add Tradewars MBBS along with MajorMud. Back then everything was dialup and the max speed was 14.4. TWHelper was the best and only TW helper around. Anyone else remember this or am I that old? I remember the game went from 1k turns/5k uni., single player game to a unlim/20k uni. MP game. Totally changed everything about the game. Just curious. |

You can still find 1k/5k games. It's the dialup that's changed. With "always on" broadband you can stay connected to games a lot easier... but with dialup you'd be up and down a lot and most players were only online a few hours in the evening. Add in the vastly reduced ping times and automation afforded by faster computers... Anyway I never played on Metropolis, but I did play on others around then. I ran a BBS back in 1993 using VBBS. I registered TW after playing on a local game... I got sick of a 250 turns so I created a 1000 turn game and banged it for myself so I could pick on the ferrengi. Telemate rocked back then. Those were fun times in their own right, but I don't miss them. I hated writing down PPT ports, I hated having no idea where I was going and having to map stuff by hand, I hated getting jacked by a ferrengi assault trader with 2500 figs. I hated having to spend days just getting a decent ship, only to have it blown away. I hated having to spend days saving up for a gtorp so I could build a planet... only to have it taken or find that I have to spend a month developing it for anything decent to come of it. I hated it when people told me that I could kill Zyrain and get a big reward from the ferrengi... and that I actually fell for it once. I hated that I had to play solo because I lived in a tiny town without any good players. I hated searching for game-related info on gopher and other BBSes just to figure out how things worked. I hated building Ms instead of Ls because "Earth type" planets sounded too cool. Compared to yester-year, the game is a lot easier now. The tools and tactics have just evolved. |

I don't remember CONNECTions in Wichita but we had several.. Scheren's Place, RiverCity (mine), Tornado Alley, Aztec, Eagle's Nest and several others. RC and TA were WWIV, Aztec and Eagle's Nest were PCBoard if memory serves. I got away from the BBS areas around '93. I remember a BBS in Lawrence called Castle Ravenloft. |

Data Highway , Star Trek BBS and Raven's Loft Comes to mind. I logged in on the Trek BBS and the Game had been running for awhile. Scouted around and ran into a Planet. IG Was on so i was stopped at that point. So I Attempted to Land and Blew up. A few weeks later a friend of mine says there a big Bounty on my me for invading the planet. Laugh. I Said, "Really". I had not logged back on in weeks. After that, I Bought the Door and MBBS Versions and Been Playing Off and On for fun. Rest in Peace Dial-up. |
