Please be aware I just recieved a notice from the power company that there will be a power interuption on Friday the 24th around 7am EST.
I'm posting this to make players aware, and there's not much I can do about it. The computer is on a power backup system and depending on how long the outage is, it's possible it can keep the system up during that time, but I can't guarante it.
If the game shuts down I need to know how the players would like me to bring it back up.
Should I:
1. Bring it up nearest quarter hour as I've advertised.
2. Bring it up nearest top of the hour so you don't have to check it as often.
3. Bring it up at a set hour for all players to be fair.
I'm hoping the game stays up, but I want to be forward about the issue just in case, and get player input on how to best handle it.

Tell everyone to CBY!
If you do option 1, the whoever isn't on top of things is going to whine that they were #SD# because the other team was able to explore unchecked.
If you do option 2, see above.
If you do option 3, someone will still complain that the time was not a good one for them.
I'd not worry about it, you're going to see someone complain no matter what you choose. I know you're trying to be fair to all, but hey- they made a commitment to play. That includes playing when it is inconvenient to do.
I've been called up at midnight before and told to get into the game. That's the breaks, kid!

A player ICQ'd me and wrote: if i were u i would not open the game duing work hours, there will be a few who log in and go to work and run defensive scripts. if u bring the game up while they cant defend then there attackers will know this and take advantage. i suggest you open the game at a neutral time and prohibit any offensive actions for 24 hrs after the server is back up. no exceptions no excuses. any violations and the offending team is disqualified.. btw that includes gridding.
This is one idea, any others?
OSO is correct. I'm expecting complaints about this however it's handled, but I'm trying my best to field everything off at the pass. This is why I'm trying to make arrangements now while there's time to discuss options.
This is obviously not how I would plan a tournament, but hey, if they shut the power down, what can I do? Somehow I doubt they will reschedule because there is a TW tournament in town.

Hard to suit everyone, but I think option 3 would be the most fair. If it were restarted in the evening after most players were off work then at least some players on each corp should be able to make it. Thank you for the headsup.

Well, RP, you know my feelings on things that feel truce-related.
If you're going to be in a tournament, you have to be prepared for things to go south on you.
IMHO you shouldn't get any complaints about your server going down unless it was because you did something you shouldn't have (which you've never done and I have no reason to ever doubt you would).
That being said, you might get complaints. Ah well.
If it were me, I'd bring the server up as soon as I could- the least downtime possible. No truces, cease-fires, or anything else that was not in the original rules.
If a team can't be bothered to try to log in, then they really don't merit a win in a tournament. Look at what has happened to c3 and some of c4. I tip my hat to c4 for having kept at it even after some of their corpies quit playing.
Corp 3 pretty much gave up after realizing they were either in over their heads or that it would require more skill and commitment than they were willing to contribute.
*I don't know why c3 quit- I'm just suggesting a reason*
So keep up the good work RP, and remember that no matter what happens, you've hosted a great game.

Just to keep this line of thought, If you're in game why don't you post what you feel might be the best time to bring up the game. I can (I think) program it to come up most any time. If you're not in game, please don't confuse the issue.

ROTFLOL, I love that "no work hours" thing. That's because you've got a player that is losing because of it.
I'm not in this game, so being neutral... I'd announce it on fed like, well, right now. And then do exactly as advertised during the game start.
That takes out the concern completely. If someone gets the raw end, well sorry... but you had plenty of advance notice.

I'm inclined to agree with all here. I think I'll just leave it as stated in the startup rules. If the game goes down I'll bring it back up on the nearest quarter hour when the power comes back. This was agreed on by all (via their silence) when the game started, so why change the rules.
You can consider this advance warning of that time frame though. Work it out with a corpie to have someone back in the game when it comes back.
Acording to the notice it's supposed to be a 30 minute outage max, so I'm pretty sure the APC will keep the game going during that time.

I say you get a a wheel, and hook it up to generate power and you run inside the wheel like a hamster. If someone starts gridding, you might have to run a little faster.
Go with your original stance on this as indicated in your last message. No one can complain - well they can and will, but you gave notice on how a downtime would be handled before the game started.
