 Cable Modem not For TW

I would not suggest that anyone use a wireless cable modem gateway from motorola for speed intensive games. I have had nothing but problems with an SBG900 model in regard to staying connected. I am also guessing that the unit is partially responsible for some very bad ping times. Today the unit is acting up and I am connected by USB because of no wireless conection even though Netstumbler says I have excellent signal strength (should it is about 10 feet away). We had an old linksys in the same location and no problems.

My ping time today:

ping : 6297 ms
ping : 234 ms
ping : 188 ms
ping : 18859ms
ping : 2672 ms
ping : 250 ms
ping : 4906 ms
ping : 3078 ms
ping : 250 ms
ping : 234 ms

I may be completely off on thinking that the dropped connections where I can't connect to the wireless and ping times are the fault of the modem - I am not a network person at all.

I tried using a wireless LinkSys connection a few years back from my laptop and always experienced a few seconds of delay between each prompt also bringing up web pages was slow as well, faster then dial-up, but still very low; so I just got a 50ft RJ-45 cable and would run that from the router, which was setup in a back bedroom at the time and run that to the living room to my lap top, that worked nicely! Since then I swapped to a USR all in one Gateway, which allowed me to toss my SpeedStream 5100 (whatever) modem.

Well, the Motorola wireless/gateway is getting tossed in favor of a Netgear WPNT834 wireless, pcmcia card, and a D-Link cable modem.

Motorola's last tech support consisted of - change the channel from 1 to 8. The previous support was change the channel from 11 to 1. The last change resulted in drops every minute or so. Three of our computers are running 802.11G wireless and all were dropping out. I guess I should have fired up the computer with 802.11B to see if it fell out also.

I am curious if anyone else is running wireless networks through a cable modem and how satisfied they are.

Yes I know this isn't exactly TWars related, but you can't play the game if your connection drops every minute or your ping times are anywhere from 170 to 18000.....

Everyone I've known that runs TW thru a wireless drops... A LOT. We had a guy on one corp that bounced on and off for the entire evening. He did that for like 2 weeks straight. Switched to wired, problem went away instantly.

It works for web stuff, but for persistent connections... consumer wireless just isn't there yet, IMO.

I played a lot on a Linksys 802.11b system and never had any issues, however the wireless access point went with one of my kids and I "upgraded" to 11G and the Motorola unit. The Linksys was solid and never had problems that weren't cable/ISP related.

I agree that wired is the best way - no interference from anything in the 2.4 range.

I think the number of wireless systems in my area may have some effect. I'm looking at 6 possible connections and if I go outside, it jumps on up from there. When we first went wireless, I could wardrive the neighborhood and hit maybe 4 APs in a square mile area.

From personal experience, my cable through Comcast has been great overall, but originially it was dropping all the time, line or wireless. It turned out the connection at the cable box that is shared with my neighbors had one very good port and other ports had weak signals. If you are on a recently built subdivision or cable is new in your area, then this may not apply. If the shared outdoor cable box is old, then the primary port is what you want to be on if you are running high speed internet. If your neighbors only have cable tv, they don't need the better port. I had one of those cable guys that was willing tell me the this and willing to switch the ports! He was a gamer too, so that helped.

Anyhow, I hope it was just your cable modem, and not your outdoor box. If all else fails talk to the service tech that comes out and ask him if your signal strength is as good as it should be.

The cable tech did find one problem with the cable itself - seems the dog next door has a penchant for chewing. The cable was mangled where it went into the box. I would have thought that the cable would have been protected, but evidently it wasn't. The cable replacement helped some, but still dropping. New access point won't be here for another week or so - not sure why they sent the card and cable modem and no AP - not much I can do different w/o it.

Cable signal strength is very good according to the current AP and the tech's testing.

only one more thing i can think of - check your windows power settings and make sure that your network adaptor cannot be turned off to save power. that can also cause drops

That is a very good point and something I found out the hard way on settings. I use a laptop and its default settings were to shutdown after a period of inactivity.
