Ok all you sexy Tradewar players, Coke needs some help. I usually use PowerDVD to watch dvd's on my computer. As of two days ago however, it will no longer play any sound. The video works fine, but the audio from the DVD plays is totally gone. I loaded up WinDVD7 and same thing, no audio. HOWEVER, it DOES play .AVI files perfect with audio...so it's limited to only DVD's. What makes this stranger however is that I CAN listen to Audio DVD in Windows Media, AND an older version of WinDVD, version 4 that I still had on my laptop for some reason.

So right now i'm stuck to either watching my movies on Windows Media or an older version of WinDVD (which is not to bad honestly, but heck I like PowerDVD). Any ideas on what I can try to fix this problem? ICQ me, Yahoo Me, for those of you who have my real number, ring me up, e-mail me, heck..send me smoke signals if you need to, but any help would be great.

Oh, I have already uninstalled, and reinstalled PowerDVD..(that was the first suggestion from someone)

I second that... sounds very codec-ish.

I agree it's probably codec related.
Do a search for the K-lite codecs and download them.
It's a codec pack that came with kazaa lite. Should help you get that sorted.
I might still have it somewhere, ICQ me if you need it coke.

Coke, quick google search came up with this:

http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Mega_ ... wnload.htm

Let me know if that solves the problem.

How about the Mute button? hehe j/k Have you tried going through the Hardware Profile for Video Sounds, etc. in Device Manager located in System Properties icon of Control Panel area? Also, maybe try running it straight out of the directory rather then through a shortcut, perhaps the command line in the shortcut is not being allowed to work right, if so maybe there is a commands doc to read threw that says which parameters do what to effectively run the program, with sound, etc.

Coke,
Also check to see the driver for the audio and see if it is set to a different driver, if you have an aftermarket audio card, the windows may have reset to its default driver, and this would cause the issue you are having as well.

If the driver is set to the windows default then set it for the driver for your sound card, you can get to it by right clicking the sound icon on the task bar on the right, click the adjust audio properties, click the sound tab, and check to see what driver is set in the sound scheme, then click the audio tab, then check the default device in the drop down menu, to see what device is set, you should have the device set for your sound card, if you have one installed, to get up the sound functions for the computer, I had a similar thing to happen to me and that was what had happened. The reason I say this is windows has its own drivers for sound, and the sound card has its own drivers. It is possible that somehow windows switched the drivers, in the window of the audio window there will be a drop menu for the drivers that are on your computer that is used for windows and for the sound card, try that to see if it works.

If all the above still fail, think HARDWARE. I had a DVD (using power DVD also) start doing similar things, still played audio CD's, or would do the windows medial thing also. Replaced the drive and problem disappeared.

There is probably some geekish answer to why one thing stopped working and not others, but I do not know it.[;)]

Probably caused the problem when you used the DVD as your Coke holder and then spilled it inside when you jumped when you got ptorped playing Tradewars.

I would say look and make sure you have the correct sound scheme selected in Powerdvd. If all is ok, Codec, thats not it, maybe a driver conflict.

yah it does...all the suggestions didn't help. Can't figure it out, but it's not the end of the world. From the codec that Oso told me to download, there is also Windows Media Classic, and I can deal with that program, it's not that bad. I can still play .avi files in powerdvd or windvd if I want...just dvd's itself I can't.

sounds to me like a case of old comp with new software takes on new copyright technology.

You're not alone on that one buddy. And ya, all programs involved were legally procured.

Actually WinDVD7 was...Can't say the same about PowerDVD :) Gotta love eMule and BitTorrents I guess.....i'll just blame it on Blockbuster Online Rental for giving me a dvd virus..sounds like an easy person to blame.
