Has anyone ever tried to devise a system/way to rank players? Does anyone thinks it's possible? |

I don't think Kilroy was asking for ranking of who is currently best; just a ranking system. I would like to see one myself. Currently most players are called noobs up to a mysterious point in which other players start calling them good players. After a period of years prolly, then---maybe---they might be called elites. No one is too clear cut on what that implies though. I think there should be maybe several ranks called noob. Each rank should have skills that the rank holder needs to learn in order to acheive that rank. Since someone has asked the question other than me, I might take time out and make a proposed list of ranks and skill requirements for that rank. Can't go very far. I'm not yet considered a good player but know some of the skills required to be one. And surely not an elite and don't know the skills required that would set one apart from a good player. But I can start with skills that a new player would have and proceed from there. Most players I've talked to say that there is only one elite now...Harley Nuss. I would put Slim Shady and Alexio in that catagory though. But only they can decide if their skills are not quite as good as K3s. Dono. Just know that I think that was what Kilroy was asking. Not a list of who is best in Trade Wars today. |

well there was TWLEAGUE who wanted to do a ranking system based off of league games. It was not active when I started two years ago, anmd i'm not sure if it ever was active, but i'm guessing that is what he was talking about in a way. |

The problem with any system of ranking TW players is that its based on opinion, whether it be the person making the list or some sort of voting system. People cant check their issues and egos at the door b4 making or voting in something like that. Judging by some of the flame wars i've seen, if it was a voting system, who knows who'd be in the top 10. Thats the problem with being good, everyone hates and fears playing with you [}:)] |

The TWLEAGUE was an attempt to come up with a ranking system that was not a "popularity contest", such as the "annual tw awards". I think Stonewall started the League concept. It had a Board of Directors comprising well respected members of the TW community, who published "League Rules", "League sanctioned games" and who invited comments and voted upon changes to the League Rules. It failed because none of us (the TW community) could come up with a sensible ranking formula. The rules were debated and modified for a couple of years, in an attempt to find ones that would work. With the 20/20 vision of hindsight, I believe that it failed because the rules were "sport" oriented - football, soccer, baseball, what have you - as opposed to tw oriented. If tw were made up largely of permacorps, with players changing teams infrequently, it would have probably worked as a ranking system. I think the rating systems were decent, there just weren't enough league games to make it work. Additionally, you had like 10 days after the start of a game to sign up for league credit. So a lot of people would start a game, then only "sign up" if it looked like they would win. Skewed the results. |

It seemed like a decent idea and one that I was surprised didn't work?. As far as I'm concerned the TWLeague is long dead, however with enough thought and input from the community I believe that there might be a place for something like this. In fact, if enough players show a renewed interest in this idea I would be willing to dedicate the time. Zoso |

TW League was a great idea, I'll say that. It seems that the community as a whole has matured enough in the past few years that something like this just might work now. The problem is ranking individuals instead of a team. If you have a furber, who is also a passive gridder that runs cols... how's he gonna get ranked? I believe most of it was geared towards kills and deaths. If someone can come up with a way to rank, that we'd all agree on (next to impossible) it would have my 100% approval. Graz |

Graz We made a genuine effort, over several years, to come up with a way to rank individual players. I no longer think that it can be done. Your case in point, furbers, colo runners etc, speaks to it. What about the great Reds? Peacemaker for one, seldom posted, seldom if ever spoke on Fed. One hell of a strategist though; directed his corpies by polite "suggestions". They almost always won. He would have ended up scoring ZERO. |

I have to disagree with you graz that a system is next to impossible. Now I'm not saying that it would be walk in the park either, but its not worth putting the time and effort in unless it's warranted. I beleive that there is a mathamatical system that can be put in place that would evenly distrube points to players who take part in a Sanctioned game. Zoso |
