I have just purchased TWGS etc and I am soliciting opinions on what the ultimate server would entail. The machine these will be running on will be able to handle pretty much anything, so no suggestions will be off limit due to system resources. I am new to the Sysop world, so please bear with me while I get things going. Thanks |

I’d shoot for a good ping rate and a stable connection. |

speed has a point there r good servers, but do to where there located have a sorry ping or a bad lag in the states. I'd play on a certain server alot more, but alot in the US won't cause of the lag... the guy is on an Island give him a break, he still provides good games, also any other computer in the house on the same connection will slow the server down... |

Good ping. Popular edits. Be reliable (open games when you say you will, keep them up, find a way to monitor them so they don't go down for 10 hour stretches, etc), get used to rebanging somewhat frequently and then advertise here. Step back and let players find you. Seems to the way most people do it around here. IMHO 99% of the server is the sysop, not the machine nor the connection. |

Offer a mix of high/mid/low turn games. Be there for your players and their problems/questions. What kind of connection are you running? My crew has a cable connection and a devoted server, in other words nothing runs on the server but TWGS and security programs, as players usually despise lag and will leave bcuz of it. Hope things go well and look forward to trying yours out! |

Ping is easy. The server is on a 100mbit connection in the datacenter and the datacenter has a few gbit to the net. I will start to work on it today to get a couple of games going. Hopefully I will have some up tonight. Thanks for all of the help. |

key is learning what everything does in the editor. for example, if i join a game and it has some ganked up settings, i won't play, regardless of the edits. ex: ISP (interactive sub prompts) it is default off. i won't play with it off because i hate being spammed. there are many other settings that are good to know also. good luck! <plug> Use my game settings exporter to post the game settings in the rebang forum. If people don't like some of those settings (like ISP as Slim mentioned above), they'll definitely let you know so you can change it. </plug> [:D] |

Doesn't sound like this applies, but... If your TWGS is behind a router, along with other PCs that access the internet, get a router that has QoS capabilities. This allows you to prioritize telnet traffic, or traffic directed to the game server. Then, when your are surfing on your PC, you don't introduce lag to the twgs box. +EP+ |

Me I have a dedicated online web server myself, great ping rate. And no lag either, unless my spyware protection programs are running, and that is for about 5 minutes one time a week. Axiom being you have the setup you had said, it would make sense to take EP's suggestion. Unless the thing is like my setup then never mind. |
