I know this is going to be extremely unpopular with everyone. But is there a way to prevent scripts? I run a game and I just want it to be a natural game, I think scripts are cheap. Anyway to stop them?

Well, you could require a certain client to be used, which you build in some sort of secure authentication. That would also require some sort of proxy on the server end to route all twgs traffic through. Look into an open source telnet client like JTA (http://www.javassh.org) to build upon. Their stream filter approach is built to easily plug in such a stream filter.

a simple way is to drop the max commands per cycle to 1-2
this is done in general editor two (h)
option (s) max command/cycle

it is not a popular method because it drags the games but it kills most scripts or causes the scripts to run so slow the user is unaware of what is going on around them till it is to late.

a hard way to learn not to use scripts on your twgs but effective.

First and foremost, post in your rebang announcement that scripts are not welcome on the server. I did not read this particular message since I was only looking at rebangs earlier, but it would have prevented me from wasting about 3 hours playing on the server. Ah well, it is all good....

Set up a closed game system. invite only non scripters. Set the commands to low. Don't be surprised that alot of people don't come and play. Not using scripts is a not too popular way to play. There are a few who still at least talk about the good old days. I have found personally the good old days were not as good as I like to remember. Not in tw alone but life in general. just my humble opinion. good luck on your twgs.

Seeing all of your points as well as still wanting to continue with the no scripts concept. I just set up one server that specifies no scripts and one server set up with a more popular set up for the bulk of people. Any scripts are welcome on this server as well as no delay, faster port recovery and such.

I apologize to you guys for wasting your time, but I still feel the same way about scripting. I think it cheapens the game. I appreciate you playing though. Good luck!

I agree with you to a degree; some scripters have spoiled the game for some players. There are, however, many tasks that would be a major pain to execute by hand. The worst I can think of would be buying down a maxed port. That would take 131 turns in a 250 hold colt, and 131 times using a calculator to multiply the ask price by the overbid factor.

ive played in 100-250 turn games and i never even turn on twx heh. just straight zoc. (of course i didnt take it all that seriously) and if commands are set high people can still do wicked attack/photon scripts (which is what i assume u think is cheap rather than the trading/buydown type scripts). playing in low max command games however IMO is no fun because even if you have only 250 turns, it takes forever to use them BY HAND because you are waiting for your last command to go through, heh. low commands per second games are more for slow typers rather than non scripters. you can make a high command/no scripting game and someone fast at keys will toast someone who is slow. i personally prefer to do things like combat by hand (of course macro's help) heh, just recently i twarped in, killed a guy, and twarped out all by hand while two other guys were setting up scripts/macros to kill him, heh.

Well, finally got around to it. So I guess I'll post some stuff.

1.) If you want that type of server, I'd recommend NOT posting game bangs on this forum. I only know of one person that post here that dislikes scripts, and I think that is afk scripts. Or post very defined info that you are looking for non scripting players.

2.) Now, I'll go down this road again. I will assume this means that no helpers, Swath, etc. Are allowed. In addition, no macros are allowed, as they are similar in concept. Not that being the case, inform people of these things. I've played on board were PPT scripts are okay, but not red scripts. Make sure you clearly define what is allowed and what isn't.

3.) The commands per second. In general, an experienced player (though I doubt any would play for the sounds of it), will slaughter inexperienced players if you do that. It takes fewer keystrokes to move the planet and kill someone, than to safely kill fig, and lay your own. The lower the commands, the more it favors the aggressor.

4.) In general, closed games only, and play with a select crowd. Of course my opinion is that in general the people who don't like scripts in use if because they don't understand how to do them. Now don't get me wrong, 1k sectors, 250 turns, probably don't need it. But 20k sectors, no scripts, I guess you have players how have alot of free time. Biggest use, scripts save time.

Anyway, just my two and a half cents.
