My definition of a Newbie is someone that just started to play the game. There is all levels of skill, so a Newbie is a begginer.

Doesn't appear to matter to the people playing today if you've played before or not. I've been playing off and on since 91-92 or so and I'm called a newb. Could care less what people think. I play for fun. Some of these guys seem to live for it.
Bottom line is if it offends you then tough. It's a game. So what if someone calls you that or something else. It's all the same thing when you get down to it. Either blow them up, if you can, or get blown up. That's all it boils down to. If you let it get to you then they've accomplished what they set out to do IF they were trying to get you riled up.
Considering some of the past threads...Res would know which ones .....it would appear that Trade Wars has it's own "n" word now.

I personally consider someone a newbie based on their level of play. If you've been playing for 5 years and still play like someone who started 2 months ago, I consider you a newbie. Take into consideration, I think it's bad form to try to insult because they
re a poor player (unless of course they start talking about how badass they are ). I think it's a lot better to try to give the players suggestions on how to become better players.

Well I play pretty well for how much I play, and I am getting better and better. In a Year I hope to be one of the top 20 players. I can only try.

Here's my definition. PlayerA refers to PlayerB as a "Newbie" or "Newb" when they feel that they are far superior to PlayerB, and have no respect for PlayerB, and truly do not care if PlayerB enjoys TradeWars or quits the game forever. Make no mistake, the use of Newbie is intended to belittle PlayerB in order for PlayerA to feel better about who they are and what they've accomplished.
The non-deprecating equivalent is "New Player" or novice.
Govern yourselves accordingly,

I would agree, however I think there is a difference in talking trash to a player who has been around a while and someone who has just came in. I think if you hae been around and someone is talking trash, you know that it is just a normal part of the game with some players. A person who is new to the game may take it personal and just say the hell with it and we lose another Tradewars player. I could tell Aesoo that his game play sucks wind and he would know that I am trying to get under his skin for instance while the new player might take it personal -- who cares? I do because I would like to see more players in the game - who wants to play on a server with only 3 or 4 people playing in a 20k sector game?
The newbie referance I don't feel is insulting to me - hopefully I will always be somewhat of a newbie at heart. Learning this game is an ongoing process for me even though I played a long time ago and came back about 7 months ago. I always learn something in every game from the other players -- sometimes the hard way, but that is the game. Call me a newbie if that makes a person feel better about themself, but don't feel too bad when I pod your b*tt.
I guess to give my answer to Aesoo's question, I feel a newbie is someone who enjoys the game, doesn't take it too seriously and is wanting to learn and improve their game play. Now, when is a person no longer a newbie? When they have the confidence in their own play that they are willing to help others, and that I feel is the only difference - they still enjoy the game, still want to learn, and they remember it is a game -- but a pretty Darn good game to play.

I'm gonna be a NOOB for life. I've got lots more to learn. I'd leave the game if I quit learning because it is what most fascinates me.

To me a newb does not yet know how to play the game right yet.
They trip over toll figs, and get podded on a toll fig. They do not know what paired ports are and try to trade between ports a long distance from each other. They get podded easily by not scanning before moving into a sector. They try to attack people in FedSpace and then try to attack Zyran when he appears and they get podded. They try to attack a port and get podded. They do not know how to use the FedComm and wonder why people are talking to them and how they can talk back. They always visit that bar at the Star Dock thinking that it is the bank. They ask the Grimmy Old Trader in the Tavern if he has any cool stuff for them to trade, and what his IM or email is. They don't know the menus yet, so they bang on a bunch of keys until they get what they want. They fall for the old "Type CBY for a new ship" joke that the other players play on them. They use Window's Telnet to play and wonder why other people are moving so fast or why they cannot see the ANSI graphics right.
That is the definition of a real newbie. Not even knowing what a port is used for, or how to play the game. Compared to some of the experts, most of us are newbies.
Just my two cents worth.

Hell yeah Maggie!! Everyone learns something new, each game they play. As for your comment AeSoo about seeing yourself as a top 10 player within a year, That is a very good goal, however it may be one that will be unattainable. I've played this game off and on since the v1.03d days, and picked it back up well over 2 years ago competitively, and I'm not even cracking top 50, and I play games all the time. Just continue to play and ignore whoever calls you a newb. The posts here are right, most of the better players will help you, they will tell you how they killed you, or how they found you, etc. It's like Maggie said, you just learn. I want to learn more and more each game I play, so just do that, learn.

I'm a Libertarian - considered more "right wing" than the Republicans. What was "PC" about his post?
Suggest you buy robust footwear when walking in llwherever, or mebbe drink some milk for the calcium - might avoid the broken bones.

My personal feeling is that if you have to ask what one is, AeSoo, you likely are one. <shrug> Just my .02

That's like calling a garbage man a Waste Transport Expert or something. It's a "nice" way of saying the same thing.
And the broken bones quote is a reference to enemies. But that's a mean thing, so I guess you didn't understand it either. [:D]
