Tradewars is dead.
Why? Every flatliner is writing scripts. Every flatliner is disseminating scripts. There aren’t any real players anymore. Just scriptjockeys.
Its like playing chess. I will sit and train myself by playing against a Chessprog. Then I’ll play against real players in the Internet or on a real board and have a grand time. But if I would ever use a prog to to give me hints, or guide my play against another human player chess would become as lame as TW2002 is now.
I’ll mention an example (sorry Lord of rings …) A Sysop banged a Game, and then he notified potential players that the Game begins yesterday (or was is the same day?). Before players can log in, he uses a script to lay fighters in all sectors of the universe. Then he starts a script to shot up all ships that try to enter one of the sectors with figs. Result is none can play in this game. It is as dead as it can be. The only thing that can happen in this game is that the sysop has the possibility to play with himself (or his scripts), which is about the same.

I dont use scripts to KILL, I kill at keys by hand sucka.

Funny how you beat around the bush with chessprogs, and scripts just to slam a server, where you got SMOKED, read your dam logs, it was not the sysop that killed you, and if you new SSShiit about TW, you'd know that getting a late start in a game lots of players would have TOLL FIGs out.

I knew it was only a matter of time before this hit this forum. This fella here claims that I laid figs and killed him. What he doesn't tell you is, I was an Ambassador. Anyone that knows much about TW knows anyone in Ambassador mode can't do anything other than warp, talk, and land on Stardock. He also doesn't tell you I have no access to the server. Strider made me an Ambassador because the game was my edits and he banged it on his server. If you're gonna run people down, get a clue before you make a moron of yourself.

Lmao, ambasadors attack me all the time, yea thats how I lose every game the ambasadors running ramant hehehehehehe uh ambassadors or was it aliens....well they both start with an A, so I am close rite......its got to be some one elses fault is all i know.....

Easy confusion for someone who likes to jump to conclusions.

Chances are someone got an attack script running, got into the game early and laid out a nice grid, ppt and got a nice ship with twarp and good odds (Aragon), and then hung at the stardock or some other nice place and let the attack script play for them.

Tradewars is not chess, it is not limited by a board and stradegy is only part of the game not the whole thing. Interesting comparison, because the expert Chess players use Scripts too. They learn Chess games and follow the script to get a victory. The French Defense, the Nimsio-Indian, The Silcelian, if I spelled those correctly are all games that are learned by book and repeated in a game. Nobody calls people who play by the books cheaters, they memorize a whole game and play it out that way. Someone else invented the game script for them to follow. Just like someone invented a way to kill players and made a script to do it.

Of course if you find someone running a script like that, either find a way to foil the script or don't play while they are online. Scripts can be foiled, use a pod with 1500 carbo on it and the script won't be able to capture it, but instead will blow it up and suffer the damage. Use those Wall of Gondor ships with 4.0 defense odds to eat up their attack figs on. Create a macro to move into one of those sectors, kill the fig, and then move out. Or a macro to move one sector away from the stardock and then quickly move out, so their ptorp hits empty space and do this until they are out of ptorps.

I often wondered if anyone wrote a "Counter Attack" script that can take out attack scripts like that? Be a lot of money in it if they did one and made it registerable.

After thinking about it a while, I still think you’re wrong.
A human player will never be able to memorize all the uncountable variation of each of these Gambits. They are usually only ways to categorize the openings, midgames or endings. But in a game you cant ever play those in a line. Every move good or bad- of the opponent puts you in a new situation and you will have to change your strategy.
But you are right, that is the way computers play the game. That’s why Kasparov beat the Fritz Prog last week. The Prog couldn’t react adequate because Kasparov made unusual moves, that weren’t in any gambits.
As for Tradewar and scripts, I can see your point. Sure I could buy me some scripts (I’ve already conceded by buying a helper at that.), but I’m not sure the Game will be fun anymore if I am just a script jockey. I’ve played tw before they had an Internet and spend a lot of nights having a great time. We were using a lot of paper and pencils to keep up with the developments and at times all the walls were covered with sector plans and logs. (My wife wasn’t so happy about it, but that’s another story). So, I will probably try to get a server up myself and try to bar all scripts. Perhaps the players will find its more fun that way –perhaps- , but then I wont be able to participate-sob.

I heard that some Firewalls may interfer with scripts. Not sure which ones. I guess you can also read Traitor's settings to mess with Script-Kiddies:

Hard to catch the script-kiddies in the act, they will run an attack script and then claim they are playing by hand and are very fast.

Would you allow scripts for ppt and ssm? Or are they discouraged as well?

Tradewars is not chess. The two are not similar enough in person vs. person play to make arguments from, but you did raise an interesting point that DOES work: Kasparov beat the computer. Why? Because he did what it didn't expect. Scripts work exactly the same way. They are dumb. Even the best written script can be beaten by someone who takes the time to do what the script cannot handle. Scripts are only as good as the person using them; they can be beaten, fooled, outplayed, sabotaged, booby-trapped, and nullified.

Scripts have not ruined the game, despite the few nay-sayers that complain about them; they have taken a tired, old dialup local bbs game and revitalized it, turning it into a fast-paced, split second decision making, competetive game play that we (well, MOST of us) enjoy.

For whats it's worth, being a programmer that I am, I am hoping for a completly scripted war game. I envision a game thats completly bot'ed. My perfect game would be an ulimited turn game, were machines rule. The best programmer of the best scripts prevail. T3 comes to life! Let the machines decide. This would obviuosly leave out human decision, human intervention, human whining, human emotions, hoomons period. This game is the perfect game for devoloping a neuro net machine. A machine that thinks, and learns.. :)

omg no then the terminators will rule and destroy us, the world will come to an end, and it will be because of a text based game, made in the 80's, evolved to the ruling class, worse than 1984 and big brother, stock pile your guns, food and water, the machines will arise and destroy us, we have so little time, band together people we are doomed.... uh well wait a minute... if its windows based we will be ok they will need us to restart, reinstall os's .... never mind whew!! i was scared there. ;)

I have been taking a second look at the server and I am now certain I was wrong about that sysop. Please accept my apologies. We had some very good greek wines at that day. was a little to strong perhaps.
