Well if you ever plan on moving your computer DSL is better because any phone jack in your house/office can be used. With cable, you have to have a new cable outlet installed.

Some Cable modems are only one way and use a dial-up line for the upload bandwidth. Mostly the older ones, I think they have had bi-directional cable modems for a while now. Download bandwidth is always faster than upload bandwidth on Cable and DSL connections.

DSL bandwidth depends on how close you are to the switching office that houses the DSLAM, the further away you are from the DSLAM the slower your bandwidth will be. Could mean the difference between a 384Kbs and 128Kbs Download Bandwidth for residential DSL. Business DSL costs more, but they can crank it as high as 1Mbs for a higher price. If you are really far away from the DSLAM, you might not even be able to get DSL. If your DSL bandwidth is very slow, you might do better to get Cable.

I used to work a Help Desk for a Baby Bell DSL hotline and we took three weeks to study how DSL works.

Some DSL companies block server protocols for Dynamic IPs, like the Baby Bell company I subscribe from. So TWGS only works at the login screen and after a player gets into a game, they shut down the protocol and cut the connection. I guess if you pay for a static IP they don't block server protocols? Speakeasy doesn't do that, but they charge a bit more. http://www.speakeasy.net/ I might switch there when my DSL contract runs out.

Well I use cable since its readilly available and currently cheaper than DSL here. It also gives you a static IP address which is convenient for a TWGS game, at least my cable company does. Drawbacks to cable are the cable system is parallelled on itself to every customer in the area of your cable box. This means as cable traffic increases in your area then your possible bandwidth can or will go down. Luckily there is little traffic in my area on the cable system.
DSL on the other hand has no static IP unless you pay extra for it and its usually more than you want to pay by a considerable amount. The other option is to use a DNS service like noip.org or whatever its called. In other words you have to send your TWGS customers through another server to get to yours. The nice thing is that every DSL line is an idividual line and there is no other service on that line so you have no traffic problems or lag except for yourself, your own computer, and the ones your route through on the net to get where your going.
I hope this gives you enough info to decide what you want to do.

Your choice is normally not going to be guided by a technology preference but rather on three things: availability, location, and (for DSL) line quality. In my area, cable modem is the better choice because 1. there are fewer cable modem users on my segment of the network and 2. the phone lines here are so old it affects the quality of the signal. On the other side of town, the cable modem segment is overloaded and quite slow while the houses are newer and have better phone wiring. However I use DSL because the local cable company's billing and service departments do not talk to each other and after about the 4th cutoff because they didn't register a payment made several weeks or months before I discontinued my relationship with the cable company and stuck with just a plain antenna for my TV viewing and DSL for my internet service.

It all depends on the ISP. Some cable modem ISP's suck, and some DSL ISP's suck. You need to ask around IN YOUR AREA and see what other people are using.

I can vouch for speakeasy; great nationwide DSL company if you live in a metropolitan area, I have ADSL 1.5/384 service with 2 static IP's. They have an awesome network, very good latency, very fast, no restrictions on what you do with the bandwidth YOU PAY FOR. Some ISP's will reconfgure the modem they send you, put filters on your line ect to keep you from using too much bandwidth.

They offer as high as 1.5/768 if your line quality is good and you live close enough to the CO. They also have residential SDSL and T1 packages.

Strider, Yes some of each have there problems. However, IPS are what will make or break you. Most Cable services use a Node Sharing support system. Were as DSL doesn't. If (big IF) with lots of money, you could get a dedicated Cable Modem node, get it.. ISP will only lease that service for institutions that are going to 1) pay out the nose. 2)have a large need such as several people on the net at once.
Cable modem service providers. Have now been told that they can not say that they can insure you a specific baud rate. Now they can only say up to. This is because of Node sharing. During High traffic times you will see it slow down considerably. Some Cable ISP however, have installed more than enough cable in certain areas for the idea of growth. This is good now.. But maybe later it will be bad. I know that it sounds as if I am against Cable ISP's, but I am not. Just depends on your area.

If you are just looking for fast reliable service for yourself, you should consider DSL. DSL is Single line to the control station. (No sharing till there). Now there are several things to take into consideration when choosing a DSL carrier. If you are in an area that offers more that one DSL ISP, that is Great. Just like anything else, SHOP SHOP SHOP. Find out if you can how far from the backbone they are. Find out what services that they offer that you can afford. Fit that to your budget. With DSL, Most ISP's offer different speeds of access. As with only a few cable ISP's.

Still confused? LOL well tomorrow this reply won't mean ****. Technology will have changed.
