No seriously, don't try to insult me by talking down to me. I don't know who you
think you are, but you are not as high as you think. Seriously, if an "Ambassador" of
this forum spends his time talking down to people, especially to me, maybe you need to be replaced.

LOL. I didn't ask for it, someone gave it to me. I don't give a flip about magic internet
status. If it means I can't say what's on my mind, I'd rather not have it. Do whatever
makes you happy. And jIc SG is reading this: This is the very reason why I never want
to be mod, you can never meet random expectations from "above."

Anyway, you asked for clarification on something I said, I gave the answer, you got snide.
If someone acts like a child then I'm going to treat them like one, don't care who they are.

See, a forced donation implies they were threatening to cut off services if they
didn't get what they wanted, or threatening to switch to a paid system altogether.

Uhm. The end result being the same. Pay or lose access.

Or in Promethius's case, if the police asked for a donation in return for high
priority response times.

No, in his case he had a traffic ticket. Those aren't the kind of priority responses we're
looking for. /waves hand/

But you were too busy thinking the world around you isn't as intelligent as you are,
instead of realizing there are shades of grey to my question.

There are times in life where there are nuances, great questions for debate and vast shades
of grey. This isn't one of them. Still, if you care to spell out what you feel is a nuance,
by all means do.

Anyway,

This is where some guy years back decided to pursue a pay to play system for a game
that was in it's hay-day. That's fine, free market and all that jazz, but the few times it's
been tried here, eh... not so effective. I still argue that if someone tried that today
people would just change servers.

It is sad, especially when you are the one being a dick.

I didn't start this fire. Not to say I haven't started my share, but this time it's all your's.

If what's on your mind is to treat people with disrespect, then I would recommend the person who gave you that needs to rethink their decision.

How did I act snide? Or a child? Please enlighten me.

*sigh*. It's the process of which donations are asked for or collected that may or may not lead to the end result, depending on the happiness of the one asking. I find donations for running services or providing software is more about knowing people appreciate their work and effort than it is about the money.

You see, when I asked who ever "forced" a donation, I truly wanted to know if anyone has ever held their services for ransom. You see, I don't watch the TW community too carefully. Yeah, I know, I run a website that tracks TWGS's. But it's politics-less and provides no insight. I really wanted to know who, if anyone, has ever done that.

I wasn't asking who's asked for donations.

I wasn't asking who's tried running pay for play.

I was asking who held their services for ransom if they weren't given enough to keep them happy. You see, it's entirely possible for a sysop to run a donation drive, actually get enough to satisfy whatever need he has, and then run donation and limitation free for years afterwards.

You know how I know? http://www.thestardock.com/?p=740 and http://www.thestardock.com/?p=524

You see, shades of grey.

That was never in debate.

Up to them. Always has been. I'm not always respectful (a concept I don't
believe in).

Yes but that's not really a shade of gray within the actual payment system. It's
simply an issue of how the arm is twisted to reach payment. While that is a nuance,
it's tangential to the original discussion.

In recent history? Sylien tried it in their spin-off.

Last check, RR used to. But then again he took his server down due to a lack of
them. Sad day.

Yes, but that isn't pay-to-play. In the realm of donate-or-die, there aren't a lot
of gray areas.

If you expand it to cover all means of financing a server, well that's different.
You have people that do donations, you have people that provide services (domain
registration, web stuff, etc), you have people that do other things with their
machine to spread out the cost, etc. There's a lot of ways to finance operational
costs.

Still, was my original point.

An answer to my question, I didn't think I was ever going to get one. Thanks.
