Why does the above sound like a derogatary remark?
If they get lots of fun and enjoyment out of going from one truce game to the next..Who are we to tell them to learn how to play a "real" Game ....Why do you think they do it? A "whole crowd" is a lot of people. If there is that many people (a whole crowd) doing this it must be fun.?!!

I agree. Why is one a real game and one is not? Why does everyone have to play a certain style of game? What’s wrong with people never wanting to leave a regulated style of game if that’s what they enjoy; it is a game after all and supposes to be enjoyable. Someone else said that truce games were not what the creator intended. So what? There are plenty of non truce games. Go play them. I have seen plenty of players return to the game via the regulated games at Ice9 during my time as Sysop at ICE9. I have also seen plenty of players just hang out and play in the regulated games, including players who have been around for a long time. Vader, Space Ghost, Xanos, just to name a few. These games are more laid back and your not going to lose the game if you miss a turn or two. I kind of had this argument before when that board, one that is more gear towards such games, was just starting. I argued that regulated games had a place then and guess what. They have been among the most popular games in the community. In fact the only regulated game open on that server right now is the most popular game going according to thestardock.com.

There is nothing wrong with playing those types of games as such.  I think Sing, and myself, look at seeing players develop and become a threat.  Not just build a base for 3 days and then leave when the truce is over.  Some stick around and play, but their ship-to-ship abilities leave them at a disadvantage - not all as there are exceptions, but speaking in general.
When I help a player learn it is to increase their knowledge of the game and hopefully some day they will pod me in return.  I've watched players develop in the "open" games and I've watched players leave who did not have the desire to learn from their mistakes.  It is very hard to make a mistake in a truce environment that you leave as soon as the truce is over - well, I shouldn't say that as I've seen "fused" and killed by naz/haz (when creating their own base) in the daily log.

Well because it kind of is. I mean some servers have people playing in 3 or 4 games until truce ends, then they move to the next game. This makes it seem like there's 60 players, but in reality there's only 15 or 20... and none of them can make it past a truce. That doesn't mean the games are all that popular, it just means that the same set of people play in all of them.

I suppose if they just reallllly enjoy warping around, killing single figs, and porting and PPTing for 3 days... maybe building a base that's going to get plastered, well ok then. But with all of that, why not just start your own local server and do everything from the deadly eyes of other players?

It seems to me that if a person is going to play for years they ought to atleast get some mastery of it. Just seems kind of sad that they don't, but it happens all of the time.

Why do they do it? I don't really know. I think some of them just hope to get lucky. Some will mouth off to other players for the ego boost, then die quickly. Some might be trying to learn, and that's great. But I think most just do it because it's the only way they can stay in a game.

Don't get me wrong, we all (myself especially) all get plastered from time to time, but rather than treating as something to avoid... I treat it as something to learn from. Just seems kindof sad I guess.

I *WISH* they'd become a threat. The problem is a person can only rise to the level of their challenges. That's true of everything in life, and no less true here. That's why it bugs me when I get into a truce game and see so many players just... not doing much. It makes it that much harder for me. That's why I always try to hit up old players, get ideas from them, try to get them back into the game, etc. I have a small list of players I'd *LOVE* to play against. I'd prolly get my butt handed to me, but I guarantee I'd learn a lot from it.

But am I going to just sit on my butt and let them run over my grid and stuff? No way. If they're halfway decent they'll know how to fight back. Never accept the "I'm a newb" excuse. Let a newb in and you'll find they aren't, and a few hours later you're in for a struggle that should never have happened. Fight hard... really hard. Swim in your enemy's blood!
