max sector figs is 2billion. they will attack at 1.25(max figs and shields of the ship you are in) so you have 1.3 or better defensive odds, and there is no nav haz, no qcannon, no mines etc.. you will surivive the sector no matter how many figs there are. of course with 2B sector colos, your best bet is to photon in :) if photons are off, quit the game cause 2B sector figs with no photons, game is either won or stalemate, either way it is over.

Yes, but nothing gets rid of those sector figs, right? Taking the planets does not transfer ownership of the sector fighters, right? I thought the photons merely freezed them, not made them useless.

They only cripple the fighters for the duration of the photon wave, not they are still good fighters and they still belong to your enemy, they are only temporarily crippled the way a ship is crippled.

On the question that was asked about "max" figs in sector. In the old MBBS version, you could deploy as many fighters as you wanted (up to the game limit) in any sector that said "Uncharted" in blue. Other than that, you have to have a planet in the sector to deploy more than 50k figs.

This "uncharted" thing does not work in Gold (not even in the MBBS version of Gold). Yet, those of us who used to play MBBS, if you don't understand the difference between "Gold MBBS" and "MBBS" you might get confused about how a lot of things work :)

Another difference in the way photons used to work is this:

It used to be if I was trapped in a planetary interdictor, I could transport out of that ship,(using the x command) go buy a photon in my new ship, write a macro that would fire a photon into the sector, transport me into the trapped ship, and I could warp out because the interdictor on the planet was crippled (even if the planet had massive shields on it).
I would simply write cpy1257^mqx(ship number)^mq1057^m (where 1257 is the sector I'm trapped in and 1057 is the sector I'm photoning from.

This no longer works, I've tried.

1. There was no game limit for fighters in MBBS
2. You could deploy unlimited amounts of fighters in ANY sector that had a planet except fedspace, you are getting confused with an old bug report from the v2 wide beta not MBBS, it was always possible to do this in MBBS.

There was a bug in ver 2.01 and higher that allowed for you to by pass the PIG by using a photon, if you could get in and out of the sector during the wave the PIG would not hold. This was considered an exploit and cheating by most systems at the time so players for the most part didn't do it, but as with all exploits some people use them not much that can be done. This was the reason that the 1 second photon became so popular because it was virtually impossible to accomplish this exploit with the built in delays of the MBBS version along with standard modem connections, but your method of utilizing this exploit was used as well as people simply photoning past PIGS into the bubble, it will however not be brought into the current versions (see previous post explaining the criteria for "feature" and "exploit")

Well I didn't know if there was a "game limit" to figs in MBBS, cuz I never had enough fighters to find out :)

I do know that in MBBS version 2.01 I could drop unlimited amounts of fighters in a sector that was labeled "uncharted" and I didn't have to have a planet there.

If that was a bug, I never knew, I just knew it was true.

As far as photoning past PIG's, I never knew it was a bug either, I just tried it once and it worked, and I used it :)

Question: You can photon sector figs, warp in, attack them (assuming they are offensive fighters) and warp out without problem, right? So this would be a valid way of working down a defense without having to lose ships/pwarp a planet out/in?

I ask because games I've played worked down into attrition with 300 K + sector figs guarding planetary interdicts and shields. We'd actually turn off quasars because the figs on the planet and in the sector could handle anything coming through.

Photoned sector figs however they are deployed can not be attacked by the trader that photoned them and entered the sector under the photon duration. unless 1 of 3 events happens while in the sector and after the photon duration has expired.

1- the trader destroys the port(if any exists).
2- the trader destroys a planet in the same sector.
3- the trader leaves the game and returns to the game still in the sector he/she fired the photon into.

When you Photon a sector and warp into it under the photons duration, you will not hit the fighters. You will not be able to attack them. Photoning into a sector gets you past any sector figs and sector cannons THAT ARE NOT shielded planets with 200 or more shields on them. (I hope I covered that throughly)[:P]

Thank you. That answers a question I've had for some time.
