quote: On the topic of duping, what happens if, in fact, a father and son are playing from a DSL line, and that father and son pair have only one IP, but they happen to be two different people, and happen to be in the same corp? I know it seems messed up, and I know that it looks like duping, but every so often, two family members will actually want to play together and work together. Perhaps it's not always a bad thing to do, if and only if they are realy two people.

[red]Several players do this and it is basicallly their own responsibility to notify the sysop of the dual IP's (BEFORE they play). Then the sysop will verify it is really two people (many husband/wife, roommate, brother/sister combos out there, just FYI)

Please note: I am NOT condoning the act of duping. I am NOT suggesting that people who are actually duping and claim that it is actualy a father/son pair are necessarily telling the truth. Merely that some common sense needs to be used here.

I often play tradewars with my wife, it's a matter of oking it with the sysop before playing on their board. At this point most of them know me and just say ok, but I remember at least once we had to be voice verified via a phone call.

Crazy, I know for fact also plays with his father. They are in fact two seperate and distinct people. I can vouch for that as I have known him for almost a full 10 years now. Scarry isnt it?

Any household, dorm room, etc., that will have multiple players playing from the same IP address (or closely matching IP addresses) should talk to the sysop of the board first, rather than after they've been caught, called dupers and banned.

As a sysop I'm for more lenient if I'm told ahead of time (though I do always verify there are really two different people). If I'm told after the fact or after the front-end automatically bans them, no amount of proof or arguing will get players unbanned even if they really are two or more different people. (I've got a very harsh anti-duping policy on my system, and I've always prided my system for being 100% dupe-free, and proactively nabbing potential dupes before they get into a game rather than after.)

On Memphis TW we have a couple of ppl who share IPs, but they came to us beforehand, and were verified. We regularly check IP numbers from TWGS logs (scripts work for that, too) to keep out dupes....

Dupers dont get away with as much as they think they do.

Correction... I did play with my father. He doesn't play anymore. I, on the other hand, am interested in getting back in. it has been a long time since I have been able to, but hopefully I'll get done with school soon, and I'll be able to play then.

This is true Crazy. I didnt know if he still played or not. I figured that the chances of him still playing were slim and next to none, but I thought that the chance of him playing was still there. Oh well. BTW, I tried calling a few days ago. You seemed to be in class. I'll try again this weekend.

I used to Play back in the early 90's and stopped in about '95. When I came back to the game I joined a server and also created another character. There was nothing saying it was not allowed. The Sysop came on and asked. I told Him up front I have 2 characters, and he asked if I was a newbie. For all intents an purposes I was. And told him I hadn't played in a while. He informed me of the no dup rule and and said he had to delete one of my characters. Basically I screwed up, because I didn't know and he didn't ban me or anything, just deleted one of my characters and told me that I should be aware of this rule. You see back when I played TW at first, you had to be voice verified by the sysop to play, so there was never any option to dup, none of my friends even tried. Anyway Now that I've been playing a lot more Duping lends itself to cheap play. If you dup you have no sense of Joy when you win.
