I'll be offering a tournament mode game, original edit of mine without the usual delays I use to help new and returning players get reacquainted without becoming space debris too quickly.

I've banged high/mid/low/unlim turn games on a regular basis, and no real competition entered any of them. One team moves in, locks the game down, and nobody else wanted to play. That's why RP's server is no longer online. Didn't really see any competition in ANY of the games.

 Re: MiA
I think what would help turn bangs is a few days notice.
I know casual players don't usually jump in at a bang, but competitive players will.
Also maybe post (turn) game openings where the turn players hang out - namely Facebook.

Big D wrote: Why did people stop watching black and white televisions? Why doesn't anyone use morse code anymore? Why did people put indoor plumbing and electrical wiring in thier houses?? Things change, technology advances, this is an old text game, but that doesn't mean we have to run off every player that still appreciates playing Tradewars. The players that are still left are the ones that want to play TW just the way it has been for the last 9 years and not some edit version of it. The only thing most of the players wanted was a bug free version of this game which "we didn't get". I love this post, however, I'd break us old-timers down into two categories - those that want to play the game as they did in the bbs days, and those that want to play the old game + internet multiplayer. There are many who, like I bumped into just yesterday, want to play the game fully manually because that is how they learned and enjoy playing it. On the other hand, there are those that have fully adapted to the game as it has been applied to the Internet, like yourself, who also want the old-fashioned game, but at a faster, multiplayer pace. While these two groups are indeed quite different, they have more in common than not. In both cases, I'd agree, they are a dying breed.

Stick with what works for you.

Only scripts I use are those that does the mundane tasks like colonizing and moving resources. Otherwise, it is a lot of fun of fun typing "ay1000^m" instead of having a script do it for me. Sure I lose the edge against scripters. But so what? At least I can say I'm actually playing the game while certain "players" have bots doing the playing for them. No fun in that.

Why not have a signup sheet and let the players create quorum and agree when a game should bang? The players who communicate with me get resets when they ask for them. I reset games that no one plays any longer, or games that players tell me they have won and want a reset. With exception to the Lobby game which is just for testing to see how you like my settings. That one can reset frequently. In both cases I close the game, rebang it and schedule it to open the next weekend, usually Friday evenings.

I have a question, would you be interested in playing a game that only allowed one person at a time to log in, like the old single-line bbs days? Maybe a stock game with 500 turns an a 2 hour time limit?

I am finding it fun to chat with folks over fedspace, which certainly beats the fidonet boards

Say in the evening multi-players are allowed, the rest of the day the game is set to single player. Another option is to leave the game single player, and use the "Lobby" game to sit and chat.

Careful sir, as you come close to mixing Fact with opinion. *smirk* Note I underlined the opinion in the above quote. Your preference is to play w/o delays. Fine, see Constitution, re:Free Country. 'As most other players today?' Most public players are breaking down into two camps, the die hard v1 player, (including myself) and the v2 players..who are rusties and crusties and grudging former v1 players. As to which camp has more players? see Micro's troller... Quote: So it looks like we stick with the same game we've had for the last 10 years. We've lost nothing. We still have the original v1 game that we've played for years....more than 10. At worst we missed an opportunity to get the v1 bugs fixed, you can't blame a dwindling player base on that. Which hopefully brings us back to the original question, the lack of interest in real competition, I think there is a niche for a server kicking off scheduled low turn - medium turn games on a regular type schedule. When I 1st read your response I misread your quote. I agree with most of what you say here, except the part about v2 have more supporters. Anyone can claim that they have more players than they do, and I will agree that more "servers" are switching to V2. What good are 100 servers with only 50 players interesting in playing on them?
