Welcome back.   People stumble back upon the game all the time, and are usually as shocked as you are.  The game has evolved a lot since then, but it's still the same old TradeWars at the core.
I'm pretty sure if you have a 2.0 or later registration, JP is still honoring them for life.  So you'd only have to pay for a TWGS reg (and gold if you want it) to upgrade from your MBBS door to the direct telnetable v3.  Someone else should be able to provide more details about that, as I just remember reading it somewhere, but not exactly where.
