Has anyone opened a copy of the file in a hexediter? It shouldn't be too difficult to figure out the record structure for the messages. My guess would be a player ID, a date/time stamp, and the message text. Once the structure is determined it would be easy to write a utility to delete the alien messages or messages over n days old. It would still require the server to be taken down but at least vital messages wouldn't be deleted.
