I'm pulling about 49.9 k on my speedy dialup =)...at 4am in the morning when everyone is asleep.
But before I moved, I had comcast and was always getting great connections in the 3 range and never lost connection, HOWEVER...around here Road Runners Cable from Time Warner upgradded there service a few months ago, and my brother in law is now getting close to 6mbit a second download, and in the range of 1.5 upload or so. And everywhere I lived, Time Warner was always cheaper then Comcasat.
Moral of the story however...dont' complain about any broudband as long as you have it. I live in the sticks and they won't ever service my area.

Keep an eye out for WiMax, Coke. They should start deploying it in more areas soon, and it's ideal for handling rural areas so they should be first on the block for once. One access point can service up to a 30 mile radius with nice broadband speeds (~60 megabit is supported, though I doubt they'll have residential offerings that fast since they won't need to to be competitive). Equipment shouldn't be all that expensive either (not much more than standard short-range Wifi stuff), and without wires to maintain, I suspect subscription rates won't be any more than DSL and cable.
