The difference is that if someone has one or two questions to help make their play better, I'd love to help them improve. If someone wants me to dig up all kinds of information for them simply so they can turn around and sell it, I'd like to be paid as a researcher. Contrary to what some people believe, I don't get paid for helping people out here, I do it because I care about the game.

It is a catch-22 situation, if I had the information I wouldn't post misinformation, yet I cannot get the informaton because the people who know it want me to do my own research even though I asked them really nice. The only way I seem to be able to learn is via my mistakes. Post what I think I know, and if it is mis-information I hope that someone corrects it, and I will pay attention to the correction.
It isn't a catch-22 at all, if you don't know what you're posting on, don't answer the question asked.

So my plans for writing a helper program are put on the back burner until I can learn the game and its formulas better. I just have not had enough free-time with college, family, and personal issues to find out what I need to know.
Absolutely. That's what you should have done in the first place. Until you know what you're talking about, how can you hope to create an application that will help others?

My observations are observations and my opinions are opinions. I admit that there is the possibility that I could be wrong.
The more you argue with me the more confused I am going to get. The more you bash me, the less likely I am to take your posts seriously. So of course this conversation is going nowhere. Instead of trying to help out someone you think is wrong and is struggling to learn, you've opted to go on the offensive and forced me to defend myself. So far you have not convinced me that I am wrong, and have only confused me more. I no longer know what to say or where to go to from here.

Ok Orion,
It's almost 4am here so this will be quick...
1st Harley and I aren't bashing you nor are we trying to confuse you further. The fact is we get frustrated, just like anyone else does, when we have to repeat ourselves over and over about the same things. You came in and said that EIS refused to give you information, that was false and you know it. Like Harley said we don't get paid for doing this we do it because we love the game and would like to help as many people as we can enjoy it as much as we do.
I know that you are trying to be helpful, and its appreciated, but when you post wrong information to questions posed by other people looking for help it just makes our job harder, and we have asked you not to do it before. When you read posts in the Technical Support forums and you aren't 100% sure of the answer, don't respond, instead wait for someone who is sure to and then you will gain the knowledge, all while not compounding the problem. After a while you will be able to answer questions with the right answer and everything will be peachy.
Like I said it is getting late and I don't want to get into your questions above right now, but what i want you to do is copy the reply you made to me above over to a new thread in the Trade Wars School forum. Tomorrow when i get up I will be happy to help you find the information you are trying to find, and more importantly how to find it.
I think I can also speak for Harley in saying that we are completely willing to help, and you don't even have to thank us, but please don't come in here saying we refuse to give you information and try and make it sound like you have been turned away at every turn, when we all know that is not the case.

I am going to assume this comment is intended for me. I wont rehash our previous discussion. I'll just say this. I help ANYONE who asks me for help. Period. I will admit - Cherokee and I were very harsh with you following your initial post in this forum. Perhaps too harsh. What drew our ire was not the fact that you supported JP in his changes - it was the fact that all of your reasoning for supporting him was based on either incorrect information, or a newbish attitude with regard to how veteran players play the game. As a high level player it frustrates me to no end when i hear someone say to me 'you're better than me because you have super scripts that you won't share and you purposefully pick on us new players to make yourself feel good'. So my natural reaction is to get pissed off when I see that attitude displayed in the forums.
You have stated that you are frustrated that you are unable to find the information and guidance that you are looking for. I for one, will agree, that learning to play well is made SIGNIFICANTLY easier if you are fortunate enough to find a really qualified player to mentor you.
So i'm not trying to confuse you or put you on the defensive. I expect you to be responsible with your posts, with respect to factual statements. If you post something that is contrary to what I say that is _incorrect_ - you can be sure that I will take the time to let you know about it. However, lesson learned. I will try to be more. . . polite about it.
Regards,
didaskalos
ps. if your above reply was to Gypsy/Kemper, my reply still stands.

Using the baseball anology, ... Tradewars seems to have Major and Little League players in the same game. Major League players complain that there is not enough competition, yet few Major League players want to mentor the Little League players to get them up to a more challenging level.
first, the 5 xp, very possible, back in 90/91ish, when we traded by hand, one of my buddies was very good at getting 2 or 5 xp each time when he was so inclined, it just takes paying attention and lucky guessing writing a script to do it.. that i would like to see.
as to the second thing about the baseball analogy, i started back up around 99/00 or so when the whole idea of multi-player and scripts and helpers were all new to me. i searched the web, learned what i could, joined games, paid attention, and talked to people. i was polite and honest and i found many many veteran players were very willing to help someone new. res judicata, one of the most hated players in the game possibly helped me more than anyone and was happy to do it. before i quit again in 02 i was getting into tediting and thinking up new ideas for games and i even found sysops who were more than willing to lend a hand to let my imagination for the game have an output. i believe it was Bud who had a server he was going to open up or had opened up, who made gave me power to go onto his server and create games. i recently came back to the game remembering very little and once again am getting help from the people who remember me, and those that dont. tradewars is often refered to as a community, and in a good community, you help your neighbors when they are in need. i think that the tradewars community is very helpful of their newly joined members and if you are saying its not, maybe you are talking to the wrong people. i personally am always willing to help and give whatever information i have to new people who know less than me. now i cant help you with formulas or writing a helper, but i think if you really want to write a helper to make the tradewars community a better place, then there will be plenty of people willing to help if you are polite and honest. anywho, that is my 2 cents plus about a buck 50.

Dear Res-
.58 is out. It has serious problems. A lot of people are going back to .55!
I've been shouting from the rooftops for years that there's too much version editing going on just to customize the game for an elite few! This latest debacle of events starting with .56 has only served to underscore my objections.
Yet, you should see the beating I take in forums for merely suggesting that...
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
What do I know, right?

The haggling routines in the game themselves have changed since then. It is now MUCH harder to get 5 exp trades.
