So what is the best density?

1 fighter per sector allows you to cover the most area with the least amount of fighters.

8 figs has the same density as a ship.

20 figs has the same density as a port.

You could also use a combination of fighters and/or armid mines to match these densities.

Best gridded sector will have a fighter, defensive please,
and at least one limpet. An armid mine is nice too, but
not a deal breaker.

You've spent the time/turns/effort entering and taking the
sector, if you want to keep it you'd better invest a little.

I like a mixture, depends on the situation, how many warps are connected to a particular sector, and whether of not there's a port.

a mix of def and off is good too.

But, I'm old school, I grid manually so I can make the call. ;)

Reason I don't like Offensive fighters, they don't wait around
for you to warp to 'em...they attack and die. Now they do
mention their passing in the daily's...so it would be a good way
to get an offline corpie to come back in to defend the grid if
they were, say, trolling the dailies waiting for a 'hit.' This kinda
depends on real time updating of the logs being available to
out-of-game players...

Toll fighters are a trap waiting to happen, I can't count the
number of times I've paid the toll and then laid 250 armids and
a couple of limpets. Make sure there is a fighter next door and
wait for the fun...

Unless of course you're in a death limit game and people are gridding in Orions or Havocs. Then Off figs destroys the ship, mines kill the pod. Nice little trap. :) I refer to these as my Ninja Figs! They kill while I sleep.

Let the other guy waste money blocking port reports. I don't grid.

By not gridding, you make those areas you do have
fighters much more significant to a person seeking
a close encounter. By not gridding, you give more power
to those who do. In short order, you'll be probed, found
and rendered irrelevant.

Even in a turn based game it would be relevant to grid. Sure it's a measly fee to put that one fighter down but if you are at your home base and someone hit's that fig ka pow. Drop a planet or do a photon on them and there toast. Nevermind I forgot who I was talking to

Interested in playing a little 1vs1? For cash?

I voted 'other' because it depends on multiple unspecified factors.
