Allright so I've been out of it a few yaers, looks like theres been alot of positive changes made to the game (Kudos to the dev team). Just ordered TWGS Lite last night (hope to get the code soon) and will be setting up a new server for you all to bash on ;) My question is this, what settings do the majority like to see and whats the current flavors of helper programs in use today (used to use twhelp but that no longer works with whats current) List them from best to worse. Going to start out the game on a 4 node to get it all tweaked out then will up the nodes as soon as things seem to be running smooth. Will be running it on a p4 1.8ghz with 1 gig of ram, broadband connect.

Thanks in advance

Try ATTAC v4.1.3 at http://www.tw-attac.com. The older version v3.1.1 is also available and you can try them both. v4.1.4 will have a neat new feature and will available in about 1 week.

My only advise is to constantly monitor your server at the beginning and encourage th eplayers to send you emails of stuff they like and stuff they don't. Also make a few games to choose from with different settings and then look periodically to see which game has more players. And for helpers, I use SWATH http://www.swath.net I like this one the best cause it's quite user friendly.

If you ordered via PayPal it shouldn't take but a couple days, if that, to get your registration codes. If you sent a check/money order, it may take a little longer as I generally only check the PO Box once a week or so.

Most servers run one standard stock game and one unlimited game .
After that , a bunch of edit games of diferent flavors.

I've had requests for 5k stock , 10k stock with 1k-2k turns.
So you may like to ask your players their preferance on universe sizes and design for them. [:)]
Pop into a game or two and ask your players , you can get a good bit of feedback from them.

As far as helpers : There is Swath , the most user friendly one out there. Maybe a bit slow in compairum to Zoc (another good script telnet helper) and TWX proxyed by either of these makes for a fast helper combo.
But lets not forget the other two helpers J-Twat and Attac.
They are usable but I've had problems with them and still consider Swath and TWX or Zoc and TWX the best all around combo the best.

But this is just my $.02

As for game settings, I wish I could find a game that had ship edits similar to game F on Vid Kid's server, although stock ships with maybe 1 or 2 new ships (with good offensive odds, or maybe 255+ holds (not sure if that's possible, can you edit a ship to have more than 255 holds?) I personally like ship edits that are kinda like this:

Max Holds: 250+
Off. Odds: 1.5:1
Def. Odds: 1.4 - 2.0:1
Max Figs Per Attack: 10,000 to 15,000 is good. 20k would be cool too tho..
Max Figs: AT LEAST 50,000
Max Mines: 200-250
Max Torps: 5-10
TPW: If ship has high off. odds, and low def. odds, 2 tpw min. is good, high def. odds and low off. odds, 1-2 tpw is cool.. if odds are like off. = 1.5 and def = 2.0, 2-3 tpw is about fair.
Transporter Range: 10-15 hops
TransWarp Drive: YES
Photons: YES
Long Range Scanner: YES
Planet Scanner: YES
Base Cost: 900k-1.3M

As far as universe size and turns go, I would like to play a game thats like 1k turns per 5k sectors, so if you got a 10k sector universe, you got 2k turns.. ya know. Maybe 1.5k turns per 5k sectors.. depends on your universe size I guess.. I think anything less is not enough turns.. You ever tried to explore a 20k sector universe with 1k turns? It's no fun. Especially when ship edits have like tpw = 3..

As for helpers, I use Attac 3.1.1, I tried 4.1.3 at first, but I guess it has some issues with Windows XP Pro, it kept crashing on me, as soon as I entered a game, even with compatibility settings set for Win98. But 3.1.1 works just fine for me. It has slightly limited features if you don't pay for it, like it will only let you run scripts for 7 cycles, then stops and says you should pay for it, or whatever.. (Hey earth, maybe you could work on that issue with 4.1.3 for me? Maybe then I'd shell out the dough ;)) Well there's my 2 cents.
