Tutorial - Configuring URL:Telnet Protocol
Have you ever gone to a trade wars site, seen a telnet link to a TWGS (eg
telnet://twgs.fakesite.com) , clicked it and had either the wrong program load or have an error message pop up. I will discuss here how to configure your browser so that it will load the program of your choice when a telnet link is selected. Click Here to see how your browser responds. The two main browsers currently in use are the Netscape browser and Microsoft Internet Explorer (the more commonly used). I will discuss below how to configue your browser to properly work with telnet links.
To configure Internet Explorer
The configuration for IE does not require that you have the browser open. Follow the proceding directions :
1. Ensure that appropriate client software (this is the program you will be using) is installed on your hard drive or network.
2. Double-click on
My Computer and select
View/Options/File Types. (note: in some versions of Windows instead of "Options", "Folder Options" is present. This is what you need)
3. Check the displayed list to see if either
Telnet or
URL:Telnet Protocol is present. If it is all you need do is select it, click
Edit, select the
open action (if this does not exists, create it), click
Edit again, and input the full path to the program you wish to use. If it wasnt present follow the instructions below :
4. Click
New Type and fill out the form as follows :
Description of Type : URL:Telnet Protocol
Associated extension: : [Place a single space here.]
Content type (MIME) : text/URL
4. Below the
Actions: box, click on
New....
5. In the
Actions box, type
open. In the
Application used ... box, type the complete path to the program you wish to use.
6. Click OK. Click Close, and then Close again
To configure Netscape Communicator (versions < 6.0)
The configuration for Netscape Communicator takes place in the actual browser. Follow the proceding directions :
1. Ensure that appropriate client software (this is the program you will be using) is installed on your hard drive or network.
2. Select
Edit/Preferences/Navigator/Applications (or
Options/General Preferences/Helpers in earlier versions of Netscape).
NOTE: Check the displayed list to see if either
Telnet or
URL:Telnet Protocol is present.
3. If it is present simply select it, click on
Edit and enter the full path of the program you want to use. If it was not present proceed to the next step
4. Click
New Type and fill out the form as follows :
Description of Type: URL:Telnet Protocol
File extension: [Place a single space here.]
MIME type: text/URL
Application to use: Enter the full path to the program you would like to use
To configure Netscape Communicator (version >= 6.0)
After initial testing, it looks like Netscape's version 6 does not allow the Telnet Protocol to occur within its browser. To get around this you will either have to connect manually or click the hyperlink using Internet Explorer or an earlier version of Netscape.
Please Note:
If you configure the URL:Telnet Protocol to run your TW helper program, the helper might not load properly. This is greatly dependent on which one you are using. Try it out. If it does work, great. If not, consider using another helper that does work or one of the plethora of terminal programs such as telnet, PuTTY, SecureCRT, or ZOC
