Is it really necessary to see the entire contents of your navpoint sectors when you hit N. I think the first line is plenty. Or or at least only the first two.

(S) Sector : 12339 in The Federation.
Ports : Stargate Alpha I, Class 9 (Special) (StarDock)

I personally never use navpoints but don't rule them out all together because I can see how they might be usefull.

Reason I make this point is because ive seen hundreds of ships/planets recorded in my navpoints at the stardock and thats just rediculous to have scrolling across my screen for no reason.

well I use it to quickly view planets in a sector.

in tedit the sysop can change this. you can not prevent the stardock from being displayed. a bunch of ships displayed on nav points? i use nav points all the time... i never get ships/traders/figs/mines or anything displayed but port and planets. you must be thinkin of something else or i am not understanding wtf you are saying.
when i hit N, i get this
(T) terra blah blah
(S) the dock blah blah
(1) 1234 blah
(2) 2345 blah
(3) 3456 blah
(4) 4567 blah

i can erase any of those by hitting Y, (1-4) 0 and enter.
ex:
Y10^m
N
(T)....
(S)....
(2)...
(3)...
(4)...
now 1 will not be displayed..
you can NOT do this to stardock or terra. ships shouldnt be displayed... hmm, maybe kemp will sound off on this one with some crazy tw knowledge no one has ever heard of.

Ships aren't displayed on nav points. Planets being displayed is useful for checking for overloads. Lets say you have a 5 different doors to various bubbles and they're all overloaded. You can use your nav points to check each sector without having to actually spend turns going there.

Slim I am aware of how to use/manipulate the navpoints, I just find it...pointless...hehe. Yes now that I think about it I never have actually seen ships on the Navpoints...just planets...its still annoying though.

Well I guess some people find the navpoints usefull. In my opionion if you have an overloaded sector that has been left for Mr. Exturn to visit and you don't know about it...you need to get some new corpies. And if YOU left it that way and don't know about it...well...this isnt the smack talk forum right. I don't want to get another STERN post from Harley.

Question:

Can you set navpoints for sectors you never visited and see the information on those sectors, or are all you can see is the sectors you visited and are empty of figs or have your figs in them?

so if you have to get to your home sector fast, how do you get there? type in the sector number, hit enter yy? if u red u dont have nsyy or ntyy, you need a n1yy or n2yy to know if you get stuck somewhere and need a quick out, u have it.

It doesn't show up unless you have visited the sector and have fighters there. The only exceptions I think are fedspace sectors and SD.

I suppose that would be faster but generally I can enter a few numbers pretty quick. The main reason I never got into using them is because early on when I started playing every time I turned around either myself or one of my scripts was accidently going to the navpoints menu and they would get set to new sectors constantly so I find it just a big annoyance that they were even there. I am typing commands, maybee I mistype something and then hit Y and next thing I know I am looking at a navpoint and the Darn game is asking me if I want to go there and I am still entering commands no wait I have to stop what I am trying to do and hit Q first and I am getting really pissed off and I don't have time for this bull**** as I am trying to get to the correct sector or maybe I am just trying to attack a player and this sentance just keeps getting longer and longer and oh look i finally hit a Q and continued on with my commands accept now because of the screwup somehow now I am typing a corporate message or even worse it went over fedcom and I just gave up my base location.

You see how boggled and aggrivating that sentance is. That is how I felt about the navpoints. As I have improved in skills and knowledge of commands it does not happen nearly as often as it used to but its like that pet peve that I will probably never get over.

hahahaha PHX, i promise ill never bring it up again :) rand u are correct, if you have no figs or have not visited the sector and set it to a navpoint it will show up as:
(1) 1234 (unknown)

I use swath so my F10=n1y F11=n2y F12=ns.
I call them my panic keys. this way in any game i have 3 keys if i am Blue and 2 if evil i can smash to haull Butt. it has saved me more than once. I always have one F10 that goes to base and F11 goes to secure Fuel port. F11 if i think i may have a chance of picking up a limpet. So in all my games these are programed to navpoints. It works for me. <shrug>

Without sounding a bit silly here..
If you dont like navpoints, then why use them..
Seems to me that's your problem.. Using something that's not required when there is no need to..

Didn't I say I never use them...yes...yes I did

from the first post

My problem was the navpoint menu accidently coming up while im trying to do something else. Because it uses the Y and N keys. These keys are used often throughout the game for Yes and No prompts.

Yeh.. No doubt.. But lets take a look at our keys, and see what jp could use instead (assuming navpoints weren in game this is what we would have)

A - Attack
B - Ig control
C - Computer
D - Display
E - Ether Probes
F - Figs
G - Fig List
H - Handle space mines
I - Information
J - Jettison Cargo
K - Show deployed mines
L - Land
M - Move
N - (reserved)
O - Starport Construction
P - Port
Q - Quit
R - Release Beacon
S - Scan
T - Corp Menu
U - Use GenTorp
V - View Game Stats
W - Tow Control
X - Trans(x)Port
Y - (reserved)
Z - Tradewars Docs

so N and Y are reserved..
I guess he could do something like move Eprobes or Gentorps to the computer prompt..
Course then that would mean he couldnt use the letters E or G..

Just outta curiosity.. You said that Y and N are common for Yes/No questions and that makes them get in the way.. But How can it get in the way cause you should only use Y/N when answering a question :)
