Hi, I've been looking around these forums for like 2 hours, looking for some help. I'm a very novice sysop running a synchronet bbs w/ the netfoss fossil driver, and I'm VERY interested in running Trade Wars. However, all I've been able to get it to do is spawn a second window that my remote players don't get to see when they attempt to start the game. I'm not interested in TWGS, nor tradewars gold, but if I can get someone to walk me thorough step by step on setting it up under synchronet bbs, I'm more then ready to register. I'd really REALY appreciate the help. Either through this forum, or my email at belfazar@charter.net

thanks

I think you need to pass the user to the twgs like an outbound connection
ie
send them to "127.0.0.1:(twgsport)"
so It's just like any outbound telnet connection

NetFoss doesn't emulate modems but does FOSSIL support. TW2002 may be expecting a modem to write to. Did you turn on FOSSIL support in TW2002?

I had a WWIV BBS using GameSrv which had NetFoss, I could connect to WWIV using FOSSIL support over GameSvr, but as soon as I ran a Door with FOSSIL support, the user side saw nothing and the BBS side had the door running waiting for user input. The Door was trying to read and write from a phantom Modem port via FOSSIL and nothing happened because that port did not exist.

Either try the FOSSIL built into Synchronet, or try a different FOSSIL like NetModem or COM/IP. NetFoss might not be workable with TW2002.

BTW, is the BBS version of TW2002 still being supported and updated, or did JP abandon work on it?

The TWGS version is the only version currently being updated. It's my understanding that if you're trying to run twgs through a bbs, you would simply need to set the bbs to use telnet or rlogin to connect to the twgs. As to specifics on how to do it, I'm not familiar with any BBS package and don't have any idea how to help you with it.

I suppose then a Telnet client is in order then. DOS based BBSes need a DOS based Telnet client.

Not sure of any Telnet clients that support FOSSIL, but some BBSes seem to support External MUDS via Telnet, so it may be possible.

I'm actually not really wanting to use the TWGS setup, as (and please correct me if I'm wrong) It's my current understanding after looking at the price page, that to register tradewars and pay for TWGS, it's like $80. I know I could get some money from my users, but this is a small private BBS (20-30 users at this time) and I don't really want to spend money on registering TW, and then on TWGS, especially if I can just use it as a door, as I already have the BBS up and running. So, that being said. I'm not trying to submit it to a TWGS server, but just call it as a native door. However, Orion_Blaster summerized PERFECTLY what my current setup is experiencing, and I did set tw to expect a fossil driver. So maybe I screwed up. I really appreciate the help though.

Hi Belfazar,
I know the twgs is expensive, I have it, but if you want to provide trade wars games to your Users twgs is the way to go. It will give you ease of operation, and your users a great game. I hope you can eventually swing the cost. in the long run its worth it. in any case good luck, the more games the better for i am a tw addict lol.

One reason you may want to look into the TWGS is because it is still being updated. There haven't been any updates to the straight door version in quite some time. There are several game ruining bugs in it. If it's just a small group of people you can trust not to take advantage of them, it shouldn't be an issue. However, if you have open games being played, you'll probably end up with problems eventually.

The person to talk to in regards to registering is jpritch@eisonline.com although for the most part, if you follow the insctructions on the purchasing page, he gets your keys out to you fairly quickly.
