*bump* I see there is a Beta V4 Forum, and it was originally mentioned that was when Linux support was most likely to be added. Can we get a confirmation that it is indeed comming in V4? |

Actually, I had planned on making some major changes to gameplay in v3, and then making v4 a completely new engine. I have changed my mind about that, and will be shifting the gameplay changes to v4, with the new engine being a later release. So the v4 that is currently in the works is still using the v3 engine, and will only include these changes in gameplay. I decided to make it a new version because the changes I'm making turned out to be much bigger than I had originally planned. I don't want to alienate those who love the game as it's currently played. No Unix support is planned for the v3 engine. One of the goals of the new engine I am writing is cross-platform support. |

Mr. Pritchett, Something that you might consider when doing the cross platform code is the availability of a "Data port". This would be a TCP port listening on port 24 for example. The client would pass a string "getshipfigs" to retrieve info on the fighter count for the given ship. Keep everything as string data to avoid network byte order issues. This would allow for elaborate ANSI data to beatify and improve the game while allowing compatibility with all helpers designed to spec. This would also allow you to quickly make improvements in the visible screens without worry about who it will affect. A great cross platform multi-thread network library for such a task that you might consider is Ptypes. http://www.melikyan.com/ptypes/ I am not affiliated in any way. Just something I have used in the past. - pcunite |

If it's any added motivation, Trade Wars is an awesome game! I used to run a dial up BBS, which has since been converted into a website which continued to run a TWGS. About a year ago, I decided to switch over to Linux, which I'm enjoying immensely. The only problem is I can't run Trade Wars any more Anyway, if you'd like some help troubleshooting the linux port, I'd be more than happy to help out. (BTW, is there a forum which is devoted to V4 discussion?) |

Serve Tradewars perhaps, but not play: * SWATH (using Wine) - http://www.swath.net/ * J-TWAT - http://sourceforge.net/projects/j-twat * Kokua (disclaimer: author) - http://www.twdata.org/kokua * Any regular terminal connecting to TWXProxy running on an old, headless windows box Don |

You can also run a terminal connection inside of screen, allowing you to write/execute scripts. |

I'm looking to run a gold server, but it'd be on a server I have hosted in a datacentre - which runs Linux. I'd be a little hasty about spending money on something which may or may not run under WINE, so I'm eagerly awaiting a native Linux release. |

Just as a side note, I'm sitting here with my purchased key for TWGS... will I need to purchase a new key for the linux port? I purchased this hoping to find a windows server I can run it on... but I don't have any windows boxes in my house, nor do my friends have any windows boxes I could use for it So... I wait.. I'm also looking into VMWare... maybe I can install it on that... every version I have found so far requires X... and my play box that I colo doesn't have X for good reason. Blah... Anyway... I patiently wait. |
