 Vanishing ships

Is there a bug or tactic that would cause ships to vanish. I am running a test game at the moment, and 4 parked ships in a secure sector have disappeared. I know ships can be captured, but doesn't the game tell you when this happens?

I have never heard of ship's vanishing in a secure sector but if you leave them parked in fed space over extern the feds will take them.
not sure about the major space lanes or rylos and alpha.
