In the original TW, there were only X number of entry points going from sectors 000 to 1111 to 2222, etc. In order to go from the lower numbers to the higher numbers you had to find these gates. Call each one a Galaxy which the Galaxies made up the Universe. This is one setting I would care to see in any TW2+ game again. Visit slbbs.com port 2002 for a rip roaring game of TW where you also have to battle the Klingons, Romulans, Orians and the Borg. |

Trade Wars 2002 is not affiliated with TW2 in any way. TW2 died back in '92 or '93 with v11.20 for DOS and v11.30 for OS/2. It was a good game in its time, being the first true multiplayer incarnation of any of the various Trade Wars type games, but even with multiplayer capability it couldn't compare to Martech's Trade Wars 2002, thus why TW2 died and Trade Wars 2002 remains alive and kicking. In TW2, you could have up to 32,000 sectors, with individual universes of 1,000 sectors each, with each universe linked to the next and previous 1,000 sectors via a gateway. It was an interesting method for creating large universes in the very tight memory constraints of DOS only machines back in those days. Lisa M. Wouldn't the new Bubbles feature handle something like this? Properly customized, I'll bet you can gain the same effect... -------------------------- ~~ XenoPhage ~~ -------------------------- |

quote: Wouldn't the new Bubbles feature handle something like this? Properly customized, I'll bet you can gain the same effect... No, bubbles are completely different from what was mentioned here... I know what he means because I've spent considerable time playing Morris and Sherrick's TW2. The universe is -very- different in design than it is in traditional Trade Wars 2002. The newer bubble expansion introduced in TWGS revision .55 would allow something -somewhat- similar. The extra bubble settings in .55 allow for building "multiverses" but all the multiverse still connect to the main universe. In TW2, the "multiverses" interconnect, somewhat like a maze, which isn't currently possible with the Trade Wars 2002 Big Bang utility. Lisa M. Could you still work this out manually? Some sort of a script to create the universe? -------------------------- ~~ XenoPhage ~~ -------------------------- |

quote: Could you still work this out manually? Some sort of a script to create the universe? Sure, I built a 1,000 sector universe -entirely- by hand. Absolutely anything is possible with universe design if you're willing to put the time and effort it takes to not only plan the universe out, but to enter the data as well. Lisa M. Very, very similiar in nature except the way the universe is put together being the biggest difference. When TW1 no longer was supported (don't know if you can even reg it anymore), TW2 was the one to use obviously. On a given system when both were present, TW1 had more players. Maybe it was that TW2 was brand new and players just weren't use to it yet. Don't know. It predates your entry into TW Land by about a decade. As time went by, TW1 disappeared and TW2 took cammand since it was supported. The best feature (about the only feature) that it had was the jump gates from XXX to 1111 to 2222, etc. where players would often go to a specific "Galaxy", form teams, setup listening posts, find all the gates, setup defenses, etc.. In order to move into a protected "Galaxy" it may be akin to an invasion. That is one option I would like to see added to the game so the Sysop could turn it on if wished. I think it would add another dimension to the game. Visit slbbs.com port 2002 for a rip roaring game of TW where you also have to battle the Klingons, Romulans, Orians and the Borg. |

When TW1 no longer was supported (don't know if you can even reg it anymore), TW2 was the one to use obviously. TW1 and TW2 can still be registered. Neither are supported, nor are they ever likely to be. TW2 was last updated in 93/94 or thereabouts, possibly a bit earlier (late 92ish?). TW1 was written by Chris Sherrick (of Sherrick and Morris' TW2 fame) and used a very similar I.EXE as TW2(game initialization program similar to bigbang.exe for TW2002). The universes created in TW1 and TW2 are strikingly similar. Again, the reason for the "multiverses" in TW1/TW2, was so that the game could load universes without pushing the computers' memory to their limit. (A 1,000 sector universe requires a lot less memory than a 10,000 or 30,000 sector universe.) quote: On a given system when both were present, TW1 had more players. As time went by, TW1 disappeared and TW2 took cammand since it was supported. Actually, TW1 would predate my entry to TW by almost two decades. I've only been playing for about two and a half years. TW2 rocked the "Trade Wars" boat, so to speak, because it introduced a true multiplayer environment to the game. And despite many, many bugs, it became widely popular by the time the majority were worked out (and about which time Morris, who had taken over full control of TW2, decided to abandon it in pursuit of other interests). quote: The best feature (about the only feature) that it had was the jump gates from XXX to 1111 to 2222, etc. where players would often go to a specific "Galaxy", form teams, setup listening posts, find all the gates, setup defenses, etc.. In order to move into a protected "Galaxy" it may be akin to an invasion. The TW2 universe created by I.EXE works in this same way, with each galaxy (I call them "miniverses") having entrance and exit points to other galaxies/miniverses. Basically, 1,000 sector bubbles with just a couple entry points. Very cool universe layout. quote: That is one option I would like to see added to the game so the Sysop could turn it on if wished. I think it would add another dimension to the game. Although the reasons for creating a universe like this aren't valid anymore with computers having hundreds of megs of RAM these days, not to mention swap and page files, it would be neat to see a universe like this in action in modern TW games. If you want to take some time to create a universe like this, I can give you some tips on how to accomplish it. I've done this before, with a 20,000 sector universe made up of 1,000 sector "miniverses" that were linked together. With the new big bang bubble options introduced in .55, it would be even easier than when I originally created this type of universe. (In a previous post I said that the new bubble options wouldn't help in this kind of universe creation, but after thinking it over some more, it would be very possible providing you have some patience and time to see it through.) Time is in question here. Doing 14 hour days as it is. Self Employed you know. But it would be fun to know how to do this. I have a life, you know.
