Hi,
I registered TWGS, and I'd like to host a game somewhere... I can afford hosting fees somewhere, but really don't know much about the possibilities. any suggestions?

Welcome aboard ;)

Now that your registered , Bang a few games and post your IP (if static)
or get a dyn forwarding and post your server on ReBang area.

That and at http://www.thestardock.com/twgssearch/index.php
and wait for players to check your server.

Again , its nice to see a new place to play.

Or your can Rent a Server -like I and Helix Do. As I've recently discovered, a 4 year University degree in Network Administration would be helpful too :D

Depends on what you want to do and if you want to setup a server in your home provided you are on a broadband service. I ran on an old 1.4 gHz with 256 meg of ram that I had gathering dust on a DSL connection without any problems. I used a free service that forwards to my IP even if it changes. The option of paying for a server exists and has been mentioned.

I think what may swing you to one option or the other is: cost and if you are going to go unlim turn games and/or games with a lot of aliens that put a load on the server. My main reason for staying on a home based server was I had a box not doing anything and I didn't have to incur any additional costs to provide a server.

it would be nice if someone would write a tutorial for setting up a tradewars server behind a firewall and using a free dynamic DNS service to allow consistent connections. There is little literature on setting up a home server, although there are already some decent ones on what to do when you have it up and running. Unless you know some network stuff it can be daunting. If I can find the time in the next week or so I might just start such a guide.

Personally, I use vmware ESXi on a server containing three virtual machines. One of them is Pfsense, an excellent free firewall /router, that sets up my virtual tradewars server in a DMZ. It was a lot of work, but it is a most excellent solution, and completely free. I really need to write up a document outlining all of the steps to accomplish this, as I have never heard of anyone doing such a thing before. Depending on your server hardware, you could have literally dozens of virtual game servers all running simultaneously if you so desired. I only have two, Tradewars and Gary's Mod, although I have the resources available for many more.

In fact, I might even consider building virtual tradewars servers for people and hosting them for a very small monthly fee, far below the $60.00 some pay for remote servers. It costs me nothing.
