Post subject:  I need a few volunteers

I"m not sure if this is the proper place for this post and trust that if not, it would be moved to the appropriate place. I need a few volunteers to try to log into my server. I believe I've got all the bugs fixed as when I log in I'm able to play and not continually lose connection.

My server address is 192.168.1.47 port 2002.

If all works out well I'll rebang what I've got and open once again for business.

Thanks everyone

Ken/Ahab

At least you don't want us to go hunting a white whale...

That is an internal network IP address. You need to get your external IP address. A good way to do that is by going to http://whatismyip.com/. After you have that, make sure that your router is set up for port forwarding so that any requests for port 22, get sent to 192.168.1.47.

Port 2002 in this case to forward, V'Ger missed the 00 on his post of forwarding 22 -- at least he wasn't twarping to a sector when he typed it as I have done too many times. ;-)

Ok, I've got the external address but haven't a clue as to how to check to see if port forwarding is on or off with the router/modem. As to the forwarding, would the address then be 72.88.110.77 port 2002? I will admit that I've never understood a lot of the WHYS things happen with modems and routers and such, just that they do.

You've got an internal network and the external internet. The internal network is assigned due to something called NAT, or network address translation. It means that one external internet IP connects to the router, and the router hands off traffic to each individual system on the internal network. Normally the router can figure out what traffic goes to which system based on the kind of traffic coming from that system, but on the case of listening applications like TWGS it can't possibly know this. That's what port forwarding is there for, it's a way of telling a router that specific traffic on the outside goes to a specific computer on the inside.

Normally it looks like this
port 2002 -> 192.168.0.8 : 2002

So that traffic coming into the router thru the internet IP via port 2002 is forwarded on to the localnet IP 192.168.0.8 on it's port 2002. The specific steps to enable this will vary from router to router, which is why nobody can really give you a 1-2-3 on the process. You'll need to look around the various menu options, find it, and enable it. Once that's done you may need to tinker a bit with the system itself, the change settings on the local firewall, maybe change some stuff on the TWGS to get it all working, but once you're done you can then setup a dynDNS on your IP so ppl can remember it.
