Post subject:  Any servers running FIOS?

Hi all.

I have finally gotten fed up with my cable company and will most likely be switching to FIOS in a month. Any servers out there running it? Anything I should be aware of if I do make the jump? I would think if anything, it would make the server more responsive, and perhaps clear out that pesky intermittent lag issue Ice9 has had... any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks.

when i lived in NY i had verizon fios. it was great. i didn't have any issues.

just a heads up tho - be prepared for when they do the install. their connection box has both ethernet and coax output - so if they see you have a cable modem, they will try to just use your existing cable modem and lines. so you will have fiber modem-> cable modem -> ethernet. i am glad i was there because i got the guy to ignore my time warner cable modem and just go straight fiber modem -> ethernet. i guess if you have your cable modem upstairs and they install the fiber modem downstairs - its easier for them to use the coax from the basement instead of running new ethernet through the floor.

when they do the fiber install, they will take fiber from the street and punch a hole in your house to get it inside your basement. they will need an ac outlet for the unit they install - it will have a small ups in it so that your phones will still work in a power outtage. by the way the phone is straight over the fiber, i.e. its not an ip phone like vonage - you get a land line over fiber. so if i were you i'd make sure you have ethernet near wherever you think they might punch that hole in your basement and put their box. the installer will be under pressure to use your coax rather than run ethernet upstairs.
