| Post subject: | hosting a game - basic question |
Hi folks, Sorry if this is pretty basic, but I have looked hard for an answer... I am returning to TW after - must be eight or ten years away - and am planning to host a small closed game for family and friends. I presently have a hosting arrangement for another purpose which has bucketloads of spare server space and bandwidth. Question is - Can I upload a TW game to a remote server and run it from there, or does it have to be hosted on a local server? Thanks in anticipation, B |

It can be hosted on a remote server if it's running a windows OS, provided you have remote access to the machine (you'll probably need admin access) via a remote desktop app. A standard web hosting platform isn't really suited to this, you'll suffer poor routing, bad pings and your host will complain about CPU usage. Usually you need a dedicated machine for this to work out. |

So basically I need to dedicate my old Win98 machine to TW and run it on a LAN off this one, right? |

Win98... might be a bit iffy, but for a private server it'd prolly be a fine. I see Win 2k server a lot, followed by win XP pro. |
