Referred to as "duping." And yes, it's cheating.. but there are some sysop tools out there to catch it.

So Point me to the OP TOOLS that you are referring too.

DSL Users can Change there IP Anytime, you know that right?
So Can a Dial Up User. Or Picture this, Comcast Offers a Dial Account to it's customers as most Broadband ISP's Do. Login with the Dial-up create the account. Then Login using the Broadband Bingo, your in Business with 5 Man Corp. Stop'in every single player to Death. Clearly we need a solution.

Have you actually played on Recent Server Lately?
It's Totally BOT City. And Most Games are over 1-3 Days.

We Need Something for Sysops to cut down carnage.

I have not found that players who dupe have much skill and that is the reason for their duping.
If I wanted to dupe, it would be a very simple matter and the method is one that cannot be detected.  I could post the method, but that only encourages people who have the tendency to do that type of thing.
There is only one time to dupe and that is when it is a posted game where duping is encouraged (dupe chess or something similar).

LOL, yes I play on servers. All servers these days are bot city, that's the game. When players are at keys they're at keys, otherwise they're online and a bot.

But botting is not duping and there isn't anything you can really do about that except spy on your players. Programs like logmein allow completely transparent duping for those that are so inclined. It's a losing battle... there are far more ways to violate the rules than you have to stop them, regardless of whatever solution you try to impose. There are thousands of open telnet proxies out there just waiting for a user.

In general I don't concern myself w/ dupers. In a turns game, if I suspect it, I'll turn it in to the sysop and let them deal with it... provided they're a corpied player. If it's just some solo guy, I don't care one bit. As prome said, they're all bad players... otherwise why would they need to cheat?

How does duping and carnage relate to one another? I don't dupe, never have and don't imagine I'll start. But in-game I'm one of the most violent players you'll find... and if I can end a game in a matter of hours (or minutes) I will.

I fail to see the relationship between script use, botting, duping and aggressive play.

Now with that said, this is the game op area. So let's keep discussion on-topic to that. If you want to start a thread that explains your position on the above, I ask that you start a thread in general discussion or smack.

As for the tools, I don't have them. But talk to Vid or Rev. I believe both use something to catch casual dupers. Most TW players are not all that computer literate these days.

miltonc, Email me and I will look and see if I have a copy of my dupecatch and you can install an instance in each game and run it for games, it will show possible dupes, then all you have to do is determine whether or not they are dupes or more than one player playing the game from the same IP, you have to remember some players have more than one person that plays from the same IP now days, but as said, the dupes also do this, only the smart players that dupe will not be caught by this program. Cause they use ways to get different ip's.

Milton, I too have the tools, if you care for them you can email me as well.  Just remember, you need to live by the rules you set on your site.  Mine are no dupes, that includes coming back to chat on fed after you've been SD'd.
My offer still stands, I'll help you if you want help.  Just need to chill a bit and listen.
(Milton got rather hot after my corpie, killed him while he was ppt'ing in a game.  Accused us of pdroping him, and we didn't, but thinks all bots should be banned to allow players like him to play the game)

TWGS wasn't designed to stop duping.  The only way I can see that you could limit players to one account effectively is to run a BBS front end. and have email registration.  Of course many players won't take the time to go through all that just to play Tradewars unless they plan on playing there quite often.
Get with Vulcan or RP and get the dupe catcher software, but it will still take some monitoring and work on you part if you want to cut down on dupers.   Also when you catch a duper, make the penalty stiff and stick to your guns.  Like Sing said, these guys are usually fly by night players and they could care less if they play on your server or not, so you aren't losing anything by making them mad.

I'd hardly say you got nothing.  There's plenty of advice here.  Sorry you don't like what you hear.  Sometimes the answers aren't going to be what you want to hear.
And if you think this is smack, I'd advise you to stay away from the smack forum

Milton, you were offered a lot of tools to help you out.
There was no smack that I could see.
Sounds like sour grapes too.

Did you think my reply to you was smack?  I just told you the facts and gave you a few ways you might fix the problem.  I'm sorry if the facts weren't what you wanted to hear.  JP isn't going to restructure this game to elliminated dupes and/or scripts no matter how much anyone wants it.   You are probably talking years of coding with little or no chance of any profit.  We just have to do the best with what we have.

We've already been told by the "powers that be" that development on TWGS is more or less done.

Any chance he might just release the code so some of the coders that play might work on newer versions?
