Hey all, My first post in preparation to a server (I hope) I want to know what I need to do to run a server online. I have a website.. now what? I want to test the server and how it runs before I buy, and speaking of buying, is there a problem with getting a reg code? I have read more than one that has been waiting for theirs. I just want to make sure. So how do I set it up on my website to play.. can it be done? I have played TW2002 online a bit but want to really get back into it, I played ALOT in the late 80's and 90's on BBS's, I LOVE this game, can't wait to run my own finally. Looking forward to any help! Joe |

Welcome to the club! You don't really need a web site to host TW games. It has it's own software so you simpley install it on your computer, forward your router port 23 (that's default, but can be changed) to your computer, and start banging games. Post your IP address and game info, and we come and play. Sounds simple right? Well it is, but wait till you start hosting. Some seem to have delays getting their registration codes, but I and several I know got them within days. |

I will try that when I get home (at work now) I played the unregistered version for my amount of turns, and it all came flooding back to me. Ahh the memories of playing this game via BBS. I read though the website and how EIS sold it to some other company that now resolves to 60gp.com and is in spanish or something.. sigh.. looking at the package deals, what is the best.. I don't expect alot of people playing probably. Thanks for the help, dang work.. want to be home |

I'd suggest if you want to host, Get the TWGS with TW Gold. It's got all the features, and a 100 node license, last I know it was around $80. There may be a version with the features and fewer nodes, but I'm not aware of it. |

Oh boy.. you know they say, the only stupid question is one that is not asked.. right? Correct me if I am wrong *newb alert* a node is a connection where people can play simultaneously.. so 4 nodes, 4 players can be zipping around the galaxy.. 100 nodes.. 100 people (dont see 100 people online at my site) I am getting pretty excited about setting it up and running it |

As RP stated, and I echo as well, welcome to the club. If you are going to register, I would suggest getting the 100 node. You may not get 100 nodes full, but you will find it more to your advantage than just the 4 node. |

Thank you Thrawn and RP for the hale and welcomes. I hope to become increasingly more active on the board as time goes on. Working on installing "tools" because it said it wasn't installed yet. Don't think they will do me any good until I register, but I want everything set up so I don't have to fiddle with it later |

I agree with Thrawn, and again to echo, RP, welcome to the club, the company you were speaking of, that JP sold rights to for TW went way left field on its concept of TW, and JP got the rights back, and is now in a deal with Sylien Entertainment for a graphic version of Trade Wars. I still like the current version myself. But am waiting for the new one too. |

I use notepad myself, and if you look at the example name files you will get a good idea of what to do to create the name and rank files for Alien races. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask. |

Thanks Vulcan, And good to hear about "JP" getting the rights back and it would be interesting to see a snapshot of what the new version might look like. Back to trying to set up my temp server. |

Kewl Thrawn.. yeah I installed them and as I suspected registration is required, no worries, they will be there when I decide to register. Any good sites for scripts, how-tos, strategies etc so when I do start playing, I won't get mopped up too soon |

Go here for scripts. http://www.grimytrader.com/index.cfm Also are you using IE7 for your browser? if so then it will not work for telnet till you go to this link and download the telnet reg keys for IE7: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/Catalogs/ie7_telnet.html |

This is still a work in progress, you can check the TWGS logo on the top right hand side for a broad list of categorized links. Document Stinger |
