yeah its me again. So the editors work fine locally, but if I try to log in using telnet to port 2003, I get this error: >telnet 192.168.0.32:2003 Connecting To 192.168.0.32:2003...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed But when I nmap the machine it shows port 2003 open. I even tried connecting from the machine running the server with the same result. From TWGS everything seems set properly. Is this the only way I can admin the server remotely? Im about to head out of town and I want to be sure I can get in remotely. |

(telnet 192.168.0.32) That is generic ip assigned by modem or router. You need to find out the real ip and forward it to it. Try http://www.ipchicken.com to find out the correct ip |

I am conneting from a machine on the same sub-net and the very machine itself. That is to say, I can use that very address to log in an play - so it is the correct address. |

That is to say, I can use that very address to log in an play - so it is the correct address. try using 127.0.0.1:2003 when on the very same machine. when on another machine within your own network, the 192 address should work, BUT some routers will block you. my inlaws have a belkin router that blocks that kind of connection. i think its ghey but belkin defends it saying that is how NAT is supposed to work. i think they are full of crap. however, you CAN connect from within your own network by using the ip address that your isp assigns to you - all routers will just route it back in to your subnet. when on a machine outside your own network, you MUST use the ip that your isp assigns to you. the 192 address is internal only and unroutable from the outside. your router interface should tell you what your ip is - if not try http://www.whatsmyip.net/. |

So I tried the home address from the server itself (127.0.0.1:2003) and that has the same result. This precludes then the router and any firewall, it can only be the server itself or the telnet client. They are simply the only two things involved everything else works perfectly fine. Actually all the telnet programs I have tried work perfectly fine as well doing other things (like playing TW2002 on the same server), really leaving only the server/editor itself. Here is a screen shot of my current configuration, maybe someone can see what I have configured wrong:
I have tried changing anything that looks remotely connected. |

You're using a localnet IP, which means you've got a NAT right? Do you have port forwarding setup? Can you telnet to remote from localhost? Can you telnet to remote from within the LAN? 192.168.0.34 is not a global IP. So if you're outside of the network... that's not going to work. |

Ok , aside from setting the DMZ on your router to forward to the IP of your server machine .. You will need to set the IP Address to AUTO .. that will solve your problems. btw .. the photo helped to figure your problem without delay [:)] Hope this helps |

I have a question, do you by chance have nortons antivirus 2005 or newer? if so then try suspending the Internet Worm Protection for a bit and try to connect, nortons is nortorious on blocking access to port 2003 on the twgs, it does it to mine all the time and I have to reset it from time to time to gain access to it, and then it works fine. |

Do you have a game running that you can access remotely? If so, the IP address would be the same, just the port number would be different, then if you open that port on your router, same as you did on your game port, all should work. It took me a while to figure this out myself, so dont sweat it. It can be done. |

I am glad to see such an active community and it is great that you are all trying to be so helpful - thnx for all the ideas though. But anyway - turns out everything was configured properly its just that telnet support in Windows XP (CMD->telnet 127.0.0.1:2003) does not support whatever the server config sw is trying to do. HyperTerminal works fine as does Tera Term, I just need to find one now that works with Linux (the same problem occurs with BASH). OK, on with a new problem then! When I login with port 2003 - if I have the password configured on the TWGS it asks for one and lets me through. I can do ok on the resulting menu: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trade Wars 2002 Game Server Administrative Mode <A> Game 1 <B> Game 2 <C> Game 3 <#> Players Online <@> Admins online <!> View game descriptions <$> Start TW2002 sessions <*> Remote Command Menu <Q> Quit ------------------------------------------------------------------ However if I try to start a tedit session it asks for another password and nothing I enter seems to work for this second password request. I can, however spawn an actual tradewars game and enter that freely. How do I find out or set this second password? |

There are two places I know that you can set passwords. When you set up the admin port, there is a setting there for a password, and there is also another setting that I've forgotten where it is, that asks if you want to use game password. So you have to enter two passwords to get in. I'll try to find that setting for you. |

OK so here is where I run into problems: I can log in @ A and things look good until I select a game to edit @ B. Then it asks for another password @ C which invariably fails.
Obviously the first password comes from A as that works to let me into the menu (B). I have speculated that the 2nd password is set for each game @ C below, but that fails as an invalid password. I have also tried password A again in this spot but that doesn't help.
I have tried turning "game passwords off" but that doesn't help. I have tried leaving the passwords blank and then not entering any passwords, but that doesn't help. I have tried long and short passwords, but that doesn't help. I even make sure to log in usung the same username supplied in the command center, but that doesn't help either. So what am I missing? Oh, let me note that I can log into a game from the menu (@B). That works perfectly fine. . |

I think what you've noted as C isn't the same. I think game password is what you've set a character in the games password, not what you've set as Admin. I could be wrong though. Try using the password you log into play with, in place of the admin password at the second prompt. |
