TWGS no bbs my computer as server help

I don't run a bbs. I have played tradewars on other sites for YEARS but I recently purchased TWGS lite for myself and want to run it off my computer as a server I have a cable modem and firewall. Could someone "Please!" write me up step by step not assuming I know allot about IPs (Idont) what to do. I have a game set up and running I just can't get anyone to connect. It runs fine on our 2nd computer when I telenet the IP but any remont won't connect. Another thread mentions something about static IP? sorry for being such a sys op newbie been a player for so many years wanted to be on the other side of things.

You'll most likely need to configure port forwarding on your router. I'm assuming it's a router/firewall. Also, you'll need to set up any firewall (software or hardware) to allow incomming connections on whatever port you have your twgs running on. I know those are the specifics you asked for, but it's the best I can give without the specifics of your setup.

I have a D-Link Dl-514 Router. I don't even know how to access it. It was installed when the cable company put the cable modem in ( we have 2 home computers on the network) I greatly appreciate your prompt reply. I will look into accessing the router if you know off hand how to please let me know. Like I said I sound like such a newb with setting it up. Been a user for so many years ( i figured I have played TW for well over 10 years since about 93) I greatly appreciate any help received. It must be something in the router because last night I turned off both firewalls (I have windows built in xp one running and McAfee) and had my remote computer operator on the phone and have them the telent ip and it wouln't let them on. I just looked through a bunch of network settings for the xp firewall and one of them was to allow telent I selected that but that should not be the solution for my immediate problem being that I had it off last night. I wish John Pritchett still lived where he did before he moved I only lived 50 or so miles from him.

Do you have any friends that live close that might have some network configuration experience that might be an easier way to get it up and running.
Otherwise I would start by downloading a copy of the routers manual here is a link to the d-link support site http://support.dlink.com/

i have D-link too, it is kinda easy
you D-liknk should have a web menu, use IExplorer
and type http://192,168,0.1, i think.
you should see a admin/pass window popup
type in "admim", no pass, and you should be in.
now comes hard part, i have to do from memory
Hell if you can wait, we can ICQ or something
and i can pass the entry's and then test.

Good news bad news. I don't use chat programs since a long time running. I tried the http with you listed taking out the commas putting in . and I got a window but tired admin and no pass it was a no go did it 3 times then got a 401 unauthorised page. Should I put the routers software in? and run setup again on it.

Try this then, go to my network places> view network connections>internet connection>properties>settings, make sure telnet is checked,and make sure the name or ip part of the service connections, points to the local address of the computer your twgs is on, it should be an internal address like this: 192.168.1.100, make sure the external and internal ports are set to the port your TWGS will be played and the TCP dot switch is on, if none of this is in the setup add it to it by clicking add, to find your internal IP address, goto local area connections>support, this will show the local ip for your computer. Use this to put into the other area. and then see if it works.Reason being. you have to also set up the cable modem or dsl sometimes, for the routing to your computer

ok on back of d-link is i tiny hole you stik a paper glip or pincel in , it is a reset switch push in fo 30 sec.
192.168.0.1

should see web type pagecome up

Vulcan - did what you advised to --- Godzilla- before I saw your message its what I ended up doing. (reset button) It worked. I configured it to allow port 23 for telenet. but I don't know how to port forward it from the router external IP to the internal? I also just called my ISP and they said we use dynamic IP ( I have a cable modem probably already mentioned that [^] ) I looked into no-isp but don't know where to go from there. DNS? I am learning this as I go along. Thanks for the help so far! [:D]

Ok to set up port forwarding for a d-link DI-514 Rev A or B, from the manual page 21.
1.) Login to the router.
2.) Click on Advanced at the top of the page.
3.) Click on Virtual Server on the left hand side of the page.
4.) Enter a name for the rule you are going to make right now.
5.) Enter the privet IP for the computer that is running the TWGS software. (to find out what the IP of that computer is go to a command prompt on the computer running the TWGS software and type in ipconfig.)
6.) Enter the port that the TWGS software is using to accept connections. (should be port 23)
7.) Enter the port that the users on the internet use to connect to your TWGS server. (should be port 23)
8.) Under schedule set to always.
9.) Click the green apply button with the check mark in it to save your new rule.

DNS is the method that computers systems use to translate human readable URL’s to IP address to make it real short there is a computer out there on the internet (DNS server) that your computer quires with a URL like http://www.yourwebpage.com the DNS server returns the URL’s IP address so that your computer can find and connect to the web site or computer you are requesting to access.

No-ip.com basically assigns an URL to your account, provides a DNS server to resolve the URL, and by running a small TSR program on the computer connected to the internet keeps track of the IP address assigned by your ISP to the public side of your router so that if your ISP ever changes your public IP people can still find and connect to your server with out having to tell them the new IP of the router.

If you can set it up on another machine and it
runs, the problem is your firewall. You'll need
to open two ports on the firewall port 23 and port
24. (until you change the default setting in twgs).

They way you do that depends on the type of firewall
you own. Look at the instructions provided with it
or go to the manufacturers page and search for "open
up a port".

You don't need a bbs.

It's a really bad idea to reset a router provided by
your isp. That is a really good way to lose your internet
connection. Go to the dlink page and figure out how to
manage your router BEFORE you reset it. It may have
a password set by your isp, then you need to ask them
to open ports 23 and 24. That may be against your
contract with your isp. They may not allow servers on
their network.
