I was wondering if it is possible for me to run a game using my home computer as the server if I get a static IP address from my ISP?

Would I be able to assign that static IP in TWGS and have user be able to log directly to a home server? Also is there any inheriant virus, etc. risk that would possibly go with that?

Any help would be great, and thanks in advance for it.

Yes you can run a TWGS from a static IP. Also instead of paying your ISP for a static IP you can use a dynamic DNS service like noip.com some are free and some charge money for the dynamic DNS service.

Anytime you open up a server or connect to the internet through a Broadband connection you should have a firewall the firewall should support NAT with port blocking / forwarding so that every network service that is used on your local network is not open to people on the internet this should stop virus like MyDoom and also keep hackers out of your personal computer.

This is exactly what I want to do. I have played tradewars on other sites for YEARS but I recently purchased TWGS lite for myself and want to run it off my computer. Could someone "Please!" write me up step by step not assuming I know allot about IPs (Idont) what to do. I have a game set up and running I just can't get anyone to connect. It runs fine on our 2nd computer when I telenet the IP but any remont won't connect. and this static ip you mention whats that. sorry for being such a sys op newbie been a player for so many years wanted to be on the other side of things.

Yea go to http://www.no-ip.com and get a name (DNS) it was free for me.
nd get the DUCip prog from them.

The DUC prog will update your no-ip account to the current static ip.
it has worked well for me. and its FREE.

Just install and run it. It should connect at port 23 at your static ip address. So if your ip address is 146.145.99.111 you'd go to

telnet 146.145.99.111 23
or
telnet 146.145.99.111:23

(note you can change the default port in the twgs software)

you could probably also use

telnet localhost

if you're sitting at the machine (because localhost is
always your machine)

It's pretty trivial really. If you want to add a
cool name to the ip address you can use the service
above (or a bunch of others). You can even connect
to the game if you're ip address is dynamic. but that
is a real pain in the Butt for players, you'd need to
notify them when the ip address changes.

i think the default sysadmin setting is
telnet youripaddress 24

or

telnet youripaddress:24

Reset the admin port, so it's something
uncommon. You can easily get hacked if
you set it to port 24 or port 2003.

The default admin port is 2003, but I'm fairly certain it isn't open to external connections by default.
