Does anyone have some hard info on precisely how these settings effect the planet? I know that habitability rating effects the numbers of or chance of a 'disaster.' I know that Hazard level specifies the scope or size of the disaster. I suppose my specific questions are:

1. When do these events occur? At extern always, extern randomly, any time randomly?

2. Is there a formula to how many colos a specific hazard level kills?

3. Based on question 1, is there a formula to give me real time frequency of a disaster given a certain habitability setting?

I'm planning out some very specific planets for a rather involved edit I'm working on and any help would be most appriciated!

Thanks in advance.

good questions, i'll add one more,
what are the settings in which there will be no colonist growth (with up to 500k colos) but also no colonist depletion?

The only one of these questions I can answer is 1. Colo death occurs at extern, I'm fairly certain.

Are you sure? I seem to recall at one time, everytime you displayed the planet, whether on it or from the TLD screen, colonists deaths COULD occur.

I'm not certain on it, but the way I remembered it working was colonists grew throughout the day, then died at extern. I could be wrong, though. If someone wants to test and let us know, feel free to :)

Well the only thing I was ever told by my mentors was always keep organics on H's to keep Colonist from dieing. I never tested it out Just took it on faith they knew what they were talking about. Is it an TW urban legend or does it effect it? Heh I don't know and probly won't worry too much about it. Organics are cheap so out of old habits I will probly continue doing it. <shrugs> Good luck on your trek on this issue. look forward to your results.

Urban legend. On a stock H, colonists grow at about .15%/day, I think.

Heh, colonists die at the rate of the Habitability/Hazard, and you don't have to wait for externals. If the Hazard rate is high enough and the Habitability rate is low enough you can literally watch them die!

There is also some sort of cycle (or at least there used to be) we called this the "death cycle."

It's simple. The higher your hazard rate, the quicker your colonists will drop off, and this is in relation to the Habitability rating.

If you use 0 for Hazard and 100 for Habitability, the colonists will multiply like bunnies.

If you use 1 for Hazard and 99 for Habitability they multiply much slower.

I'm still working on the exact combination to make the cols stay right where they are, I haven't found a setting for this, however I'm theorizing that it's the midrange point.

Default Hazard is 255. Default Habitability is 100. I'm sure you math whizzes can figure out what is the mid range point, I'm doing it by trial and error.

More to follow.
